topwater walleyes

I was recently river fishing for smallies w/ topwater baits. It had just rained. I know this is not typically the best time to hit the river due to debris in the water, but what the heck. I caught a few smallies. I had three straight misses. I could make out a long, skinny fish with a white bottom. I figured it was a northern. I finally ended up hooking a 19in and 18in walleye. Has anyone else ever had this happen? I'm sure some of the other misses were walleyes as well! Thanks!

Yes I have. In fact I know a couple of guys who fish top water for eyes on purpose during the fall frog runs. Eyes love frogs! Most of them twitch rapalas on the surface. A few even use hula poppers! I haven't done it in years as I'm usually trolling cranks. But in my shore fishing days I did it just for kicks!

SSSSHHHHH..... Keep it a secret wink.gif

While casting Rattlin' Raps, I've had 'eyes completely blow the surface up while I was attempting to pull my crank out of the water. What a rush! They act as though they want to become bucketmouths!
