I have an Apostle on my lanyard. I didn't use it much last year because I just couldn't get it quite right. I was really having an issue with the guts MIke was using. They didn't fit tightly into the insert so it was tough to get it tuned the way I like.

About a week after the season got done I replaced his guts with some Foiles guts, and now I really like it. I know he has changed the guts he was using so you should be o.k.

Maxxedout, did you ask Mikey to put different guts in it?

I have a handfull of his calls (not to mention the VERY FIRST snow goose call he made)

Mikey is great at doing what YOU want done to the call.

Not sure what guts are in my goose calls from him but I have no problem running them.

Mikey makes some of the best calls around.

His awards speak for themseleves.

That reminds me, I need to order the red, white and blue swirl goose call from him.

Lifeoutdoors, you wont be sorry if you do pick one up.

I also thought is was a very strange post.

You spend that kind of money on a hand built call ... why would you ... ?

I am sure Mike would work to make things right with any of his customers.

He lives in Zumbrota.

Nothing wrong with swapping guts on calls it's your money, but if you are spending $100+ one would expect the call to function fine.

Many custom callers would probably take it personally.

Foiles ? ... won't even go there today.

Yep I know Mike talked to him many times. My guides run his calls, I run a few of his calls. I just didn't like the guts he was using with his disciple.

I replaced them with a different set, happened to be a foiles set, and it was just a great combination. (this was before all the foiles stuff went down, I have taken his calls off my lanyards and would happily replace the foiles guts in the call with a replica set from another manufacturer). It doesn't make the call bad or the call maker bad. Mike doesn't have to make anything right with me because I'm not upset.

FYI...most call makers don't have a custom gut they created, they usually recreate someones guts for their calls. Before someone jumps all over that statement not I'm saying most, not all call makers.

I actually got a comp call from Flyway customs (another MN call maker) and didn't like his guts either, replaced it with a Foiles set of broken in guts from one of my old Strait meat's and oh my goodness that thing is 100% filthy. That is actually my favorite call on my lanyard.

Britt - No two people are going to blow a short reed call the same way. I don't think a custom call maker is going to be upset for you tweaking his call because something works better for you. It doesn't mean it's better for everyone just you and they way you call. I've got about $1000 in short reed calls in my house and I've done something to each and everyone of them to tweek them to the way I like them. Doesn't mean my tweeks would be good for everyone though.

Maxxedout, what you said in the last part of your post is SSSOOOOO true.

I just feel that if you are spending some good money on a good call the maker should make it the way you want it.

I know Mikey is this way.

You don't like it, he will tweek it for you.

I know he had to buy the guts for the snow goose call I got from him.

Mikey is top notch guy who makes top notch calls.

The snow goose call I have is part of a matching set with a honker call.

I sent mikey another call I had to have him tune the new the same way my other one was.

Love them both.

I know he has a new set of guts he's running now and I'll probably get them at Gamefair when I see him there and try them out. Once I start messing around with the guts and the reed it takes me anywhere from 30-45 minutes to get it the way I want it. It would be impossible for a call maker to do that for me.

Not arguing, just continuing discussion here...

To me, swapping guts out in a call is all about personal preference. I highly doubt any call maker, be it a big name CNC guy or a guy turning them on a mini lathe is really going to care whether or not you run GK BIG's with an edge reed or a set of $5 cluckers that they sent the call with. Think of the goose call as a musical instrument. Drummers and guitarists spend countless hours tuning their gear to get the sound they want. Why should goose calling be any different?

Talk about off track from the original post ... though .. the guy simply asked

Quote:
anyone of you use this goose call? they are on sale and maybe looking to get one

Answer: Minnesota call maker that does a nice job. Recommend you go visit him to try out the call before you buy ...

Maybe some people are hiding one guys guts inside another call brand because the name on the outside of the call where the guts are pulled from is not that acceptable right now. ??

Lol...now is the time to be buying foiles calls...some guys are selling them dirt cheap. I could care less who's name is on the call. Now in this case, I don't think I will be buying anything from the FMI shop anytime soon, but I just picked up a foiles cackler with broken in guts for $45 and that call flat out rocks. Faster than my RNT Dirtybird, and faster than the Traffic I had. If we all chose calls from call makers that were perfect individuals there would be some slim pickings. There are call makers that are alcoholics, pot heads, racists, call makers that get arrested for assault, etc. Some are still in business, some aren't.

I don't see anything wrong with one changing the guts in the original call. I know lots of guys who do it wheteher its a great call, it's a personal preference and how the call is run for them. I've done it to my calls.

BTW, Great lookin call!

Thanks it gets a ton of compliments. Most think I'm nuts for having it on my lanyard because it looks so nice.

It's really only been the last couple of years where I've really started to get particular with the guts of a call. For 90% of the callers out there, myself included up until a couple of years ago, you can get a call right out of the shop and be tickled pink with your purchase. It's only a certain point you get to calling and certain notes that you want to use consistently where fine tuning your call is a factor.

Yes to the original question you will be very happy with your purchase.

And Britt if it weren't for rants getting off topic I don't think waterfowl boards would exist smile

Ya really think those park geese can tell the difference ?

Canada Geese are much like mallard hens and turkey hens ... some times they sound textbook other times you would swear what your hearing is a guy who cant call worth dirt. Low and behold the bird is real.

Bet ya half the tundra Canada geese shot over decoys are coming in no matter what they hear and plenty would probably prefer to hear little if anything. Location is still king.

Location is still king.

No doubt. Get on the [PoorWordUsage] and a few clucks will pretty much lock em up most of the time!

On the days we run traffic though, the birds usually seem to react better to that fast aggressive calling. Heck there are some days where 6 guys in a pit can't call fast enough. Let off for a second and the birds bail out.
