Mid 80s 25hp Evinrude prop/hub issues...

Redline

Question

Well, I have an old Lund with a 85 or 86ish 25hp Evinrude on back. It runs like and starts great, but once I get above say, 70% throttle, the prop stops spinning and the rpms fly. I've been told it's a broken sheer pin, but someone also told me a spun hub.

I've never worked on outboards, but I've done some basic car stuff. Is this something I could tackle? Is there an easy way for me to find out what it is?

Thanks guys!

Spun hub. Take it off, take to dealer, and get a new prop. I am not sure it is worth "fixing" at the price of those props. Or find an old used one somewhere. I would just get new probably, if it were me. Happened to my buddy's 15hp mariner, and he is happier than a pig in mud with his new prop on. With bigger hp props, like the merc's with flo torque hubs, it is easier to just get new hub and do it yourself, but I think those smaller/older ones need to be pressed in, but I am no mechanic, that is for sure! Good luck, nice and easy and relatively cheap fix for you.
