1st Morels of the season!

While on a work outing in Central Illinois last Tuesday, I spent my lunch hour in a local city park around Decature, IL checking for mushrooms. I picked my 1st hat full of the season around one tree. They appear to be in the peak of their season right now. They are also just starting to find quite a few in Central Iowa now as well. A couple of cell phone photos to wet your appetite for the season coming!

They buy them near me at the Apple Orchard for $14/lb early season and usually goes down to $12 or $10 when things get going.

They retail the 2nds locally for $20 or $21 per pound and seem to sell a lot of them.

Most are shipped to Illinois to fill contracts for retail sale. I have seen them selling down there for $40/lbs in road stands, which makes to sense to me when dead elms seem to be very common there. I have found mushrooms quickly each time I checked, even not being familiar with the areas. Good old GPS "find place of interest near you" , then click on "state park/natural area" and it is morel city!

jkcmj, I glanced at the photo and thought, "Geez, why doesn't he say anything about the turkey he shot? That was a good day!" then I looked at where the body joins the head and thought, "That's no turkey, that's an armadillo. He definitely should have said something about that!" Then I realized that it was a decoy...

I guess I'm not firing on all cylinders yet this morning.

While working down in Cedar Rapids, Iowa today I checked a local city park and came up with a couple of trees producing a bunch. That's a three state spread now! I will have to sneak up into WI for a few next! Sorry for the blurry photos, but I have misplaced my good digital and have to rely on the cell phone..

They are really heating up in SE MN right now. I picked 5-10 lbs today in just a few hours of walking. Many were already dried up in the open areas, while the north slopes were barely showing the little grays.

And a false morel...The top on this one looked exactly like a real morel, but the hood gave it away...

The few spots i have that normally produce have not given me one yet. cry

I'm still hoping there just coming in late.

I was at rainbow this morning and noticed they are selling morels

for $15 AN OUNCE

I just sold a few pounds at the Orchard in Centerville, WI and they were paying $15 a pound. Most years it is a little less $14 to start, then $10 by seasons end. They said they are coming in very slowly now, but if you look enough, they are out there!

We found a ton of them this weekend near akeley. I don't even eat fungus, but stumbled across a bunch of it, so we started picking. We filled a couple cargo boxes on the ATV's then got bored with it. We gave it all away to friends of ours that like to eat the stuff. If I knew where to sell them, I would have made a few bucks yesterday. It was all right along trails. We never ventured farther than 3 feet off the edge of the trails to pick them. There is still plenty more out there!

jkcmj,

I like the t-shirt your son is wearing in the photo. My son also wrestled in that tourny. 93 lbs. 5th/6th grade.

Just when I thought I was through finding shrooms for the season, I found over a pound of fresh big ones while fixing pasture fence this afternoon! What a treat!

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
