2004 Silverado Coolant Leak

Recommended Posts

2004 Silverado, 5.3 with 114,000 miles. Just started noticing a couple of spots under the truck in the driveway after sitting over night this week. It is orange so I'm assuming coolant (Dexcool). I'll have to remove the skid plate tomorrow to try and find where it's coming from. I suspect the water pump. What are the other possibilies? If it's the water pump, how hard of a job and how long would it take. I am mechanically inclined.

It could be one of the water pump gaskets, it's common for them to leak. I replaced the water pump on my 04 last fall (could have just done the gasket but since over 100K on it and having to pull the pump off anyway I just replaced the pump as well). I posted on here when I replaced it, it's a pretty straightforward job. Remove the fan shroud, belt, fan, hoses, pump, clean the surfaces good for the new gaskets and put it all back together. Add coolant and you're good to go for the most part. Sometimes takes a little bit to get all the air out, but not bad. I did mine at my friends dads place, so I got to make the mess somewhere else grin It's a good time to change both the belts if you need to since everything is easy to get at.
