Wireless router is slow

Recommended Posts

I've always had hit, or miss success getting a decent signal using my wireless router.

Today I did a speed test on my android phone as follows:

1) Work: DSL with wireless router 3080 down / 380 up

2) T-Mobile HSPA+ network: 3851 down / 1534 up

3) Home: Comcast cable with Linksys wireless N router as follows:

Down / up

1194 / 3700

1448 / 3730

1313 / 3790

1455 / 3691

1455 / 3691

751 / 3683

1100 / 3619

1150 / 3636

All speeds on phone are kbps

I notice when testing the download speed at home the needle (speed) stutters. Doesn't do it on the upload test.

My hard wired desktop test gives these results at home: 20.90 Mbps / 3.68 Mbps

Any ideas about my weird router issue?

Thanks

Signal strength does make a difference. What kind of signal strength are you getting. The strange thing is the upload speed is faster than the download, usually opposite. Also try it at different times of the day. If there are a lot of other people on it will slow things down dramatically.

I have the same problem with mediacom internet. Although mine doesnt matter if I am wireless or not. I can test it 1 time and get 30m down 3 up, then 20 minutes later I get 1.5m down, and 3m up. If it is only showing up wirelessly, it could be your router, or the wireless device. If you have a nother wireless device, try testing it with that, if that does the same thing, then throw the router away and buy a different one. Lynksys routers are junk in the last 3 years.

I was told by my internet provider to get a D Link DIR 655, but when I went to buy it, they only had refurbished ones, so I didnt buy it, and bought a Netgear WND3700 and havent had any issues with it.

I was told to unplug it and power it up 1 time a month, and I havent had any problems.

Like 4WE mentioned, the DIR 655 is a great router. Its what I use at home and its what I recommend to all my clients. I've never had a problem with them.

You can find them on clearance now for 70-80 bucks. They were originally $150 I think.
