Bear hunting on the reservation

Recommended Posts

Scoot...I'm taking it your hunting around WE and the cabin.

Best of my understanding it is if you are on public land you are just fine. If you are on private land make sure you have land owners permission just like rest of the state. Where it changes is for Natives.

A Native America MAY hunt ANY land Posted or NOT posted as long as that hunter is a member of that tribe and stays on the reservation. AKA a Native American can hunt anyone's land whether they own it or not. My dad is Native American and loves this rule since he does not own land but does think it is not right to cross no hunting or trespassing signs but it is legal for them to do that. This does not give them permission to DRIVE on that property and they have to walk in onto the property.

I hope this helps you out Scoot

Thanks for the replies, fellas. Yep, I'm thinking about hunting public land not too far from the cabin at WE.

Code-Man, I had no idea about that second law you mentioned. Very interesting...

I heard through the grapevine that I needed to have a tribal member be a sponsor of some sort. Sounds like I was misinformed...

Thanks!

Scoot, you may want to get in touch with the Reservation and ask, just to make sure. A phone call to find out what you already know costs a lot less in terms of time/ hassle/ money than being informed when in the field that you're in violation probably will. Especially if you've already concluded your hunt...

Code-Man, What reservation are you talking about?

WE=White Earth I guess we always just say WE and since I know about Scoot having ties with a cabin on WE Lake just assumed so.

Scoot you should hit up Leech aka Jim and double check. He'd be more up to date with laws and worse case probably cover you for a beer or a fishing trip lol!

Great minds think alike, Code. I've been in touch with him and he's willing to help- he's a good guy. Not sure if this'll come together or not- I'd have to draw a tag, but I'd have to decide that's what I want to do too. I'm limited on hunting time this coming Sep, so I'm not sure I'll want to waste the bear tag with only limited time to make use of it.

If I remember Scoot application is free for residents but I don't know for non. I'm thinking of applying but I haven't gotten a definate yes from either group that I would be hunting with so just a bit nervous. Plus I might be moving to SD so it might put a wrench in fall hunting plans! If you can find out what Jim says and keep us posted.
