Best Fly-In Resort in Ontario or Manitoba

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am looking for some recommendations for a "Once in a lifetime" fly in trip. The trip would be probably be between June - August. We would like to do 5 - 7 days and would like to stay under 1400 dollars per person. There would be 2 of us. I know that this HSOforum has L & M Fly in OUtpost, Barker Bay Resort, and Gateway North Outfitters. ANy information on those three and any other would be great. We would mainly be targeting walleye and northern (mostly walleye. Can a guy catch "numbers" of fish all summer? Also, do any of these resorts give Fishing Minnesota members discounts. Thanks for the help.

smack,

I went up to GNO's boat-in outpost on Pipestone last year. I was fishing muskie primarily, but was VERY happy with GNO's cabin and service. Beautiful location.

I don't know about the walleye fishing, but I did catch a 30" walleye on a bulldog. Thought for sure that was a muskie I'd seen earlier.

Another great place is Delaney Lake Lodge. Fly-in only and fully guided. May be a couple hundred more than your budget request, but the food and location was great. Their walleye fishing is done on the English River.

Have fun choosing a location!

A bunch of us do a fly-in trip every other year with Northern Wildernness Outfitters; been going with them for better than 15 years now. Their base in in Fort Francis, Ontario. They have always done a good job for us and the fishing has always been excellent. We always go in June or September and we have always caught more fish than we could count. Their standard trip is 5 days of fishing, fly out the sixth. Their rates to Tessup are well within your budget.

BTW, we are going with them the first week of June this year. The wait is driving me crazy LOL

If you are interested in NWO and there are just two of you, be sure to call them about rates for their second and third tier rates. The rates on their HSOforum for those outer lakes are for 4 or more people. But I bet Vic would work with you on an outer tier lake. I've never been to Tessup, but a couple people I talked to said it was very good.

Another option to look into is Ignace Airways. They have several options that will fit your needs well. You will have a few more hours of windsheild time, but the cost will be quite a bit less. The biggest expense of a fly in trip is the flying. Most places are around $10 per mile and you pay that rate for 4 legs of flying. If your final destination is 50 miles from the airbase, you pay for 200 miles.

I went through several different fly-in resorts/outfitters before I came across L&M Fly-In. After that first experience I now must be on season 12 of using their services.

They have always impressed me with their work ethic. They invest a lot of their time and money in to their cabins and equipment. You will hard pressed to find as nice of outpost cabins as theirs. It would be quite unusual to find a leaky boat or a poor working motor at their facility. I expect dry feet (unless it is raining) and I expect my motor to run all day on the lowest throttle setting with out problems. And this is what I have found to expect from L&M.

All of this sounds great but if the fishing was not good I would look for a new outfitter or resort to go to. I have a few favorite lakes depending on the season but they all should be good for walleye in the summer. Shane from L&M can you additional details about the different lakes to help in making your decision.

Everyone may have a opinion on time of year but I prefer late July and early August. The fish will be in their summer pattern and you should not encounter seasonal fish movements to complicate things.

L&M rates should fall within your limits. I am sure there are a few other great outfitters but you may have to experience a dozen or so to find one that can compare to L&M.

Pipestone Fly-in Outfitters would be a good choice too! Mike and Renae Henry do an excellent job, they have nice equipment and cabins and are both very courteous and professional. They fly out of Clearwater Lake just north of Emo. They have 5 fly-in lakes located in Wabakimi Provincial Park and one boat-in cabin on Slender Lake, which is part of the Clearwater-Pipestone chain of lakes. I have flown with them and been to their Slender Lake cabin on a few occasions and been very impressed with their operation.

I forgot to add that the fishing was excellent for walleyes. I'm not a northern fisherman, so I'm not much help there,, but I'm sure all the lakes are good for large northerns. Some of their fly-in lakes have lake trout too.

You should have excellent fishing with most outfitters. It's pretty hard to go to Canada and not have good fishing. Being that they actually protect their lakes and fish populations, unlike MN, quality fishing exists in most lakes. Good luck and good fishing!

Our group has went with them twice in the past, unfortunatly it has been about 6 years since our last once....we fished Megisse (sp?) primarily for muskie and lake trout and had a blast, only cabin on the lake and nice cabin, cannot speak for any other of the cabins and lakes but I would have to imagine that they are all similar.. top notch.

If you are a beer drinker, like were were, (this was when we were all in our 20's yet...) we had to fly in beer ahead of time to stay under the weight restrictions and they were very accomodating with this as they said they had to check on the group in the cabin anyway, they charged a nominal fee for this service neccessity....anyway, I think you will have a good time. I need to get back there soon. Traded fishing in Canada every year for two awesome kids, can't wait till thier old enogh to tag along!

Gotta agree with Net_Man - it's hard to beat an L&M trip! I've also used several outfitters and L&M really puts a lot of TLC into their cabins and equipment while keeping prices competitive. It does make a difference in your vacation and I would highly recommend a trip with them!
