iPhone 4 questions....

Recommended Posts

I bought a new '11 Dodge Ram with Uconnect. My Droid X does not work with this radio, although it worked with the Uconnect in my '06 Dodge Ram.

Anyways, I have plug ins in the new truck which allow me to hook an iPhone to the radio. There's even one in the glove compartment so I can USB my phone to the radio through the glove compartment and then control all functions (voice, music, internet) through the radio, all while just leaving my phone in the glove compartment.

This would be nice while snowplowing, as I wouldn't have the phone sliding all over.

Anyways, I know I can just keep the Droid and hope that there's an update sometime, or I have an update available on 5-1-11 for one of the phones, at which time I may change to an iPhone.

My questions are this...

Can you download an app like on the Droid, where you can then download free music? Or does everything go through iTunes?

I'm not one that uses my phone for alot other than the typical games, phone calls, texts, and surfing the web, as well as listening to MY music while plowing.

I'd assume you can get "basically" the same type of apps for an iPhone than you can with an Android....

The only real business app I use on my X is LogMeIn ignition, using this to access my computers at home.

I see on LogMeIn's HSOforum that they have apps for iPhone, so I'm sure I can get it.

Lastly I'd be on Verizon. I can sell the Droid online for about my upgrade to the iPhone, so I'm not concerned about the cost to upgrade.

I know it's a Chevy / Ford conversation, but why are the reasons I shouldn't change OS?

You can put all of your own music into your IPhone but it all has to sync through ITunes. I have not looked but there might be some type of 3rd party software that would let you do it but I have never needed it. My music library is around 10000 to 13000 songs. It is every CD that we own and other music that has been shared with me.

You just need to have Itunes look for all the music on your computer and it will pull everything in that is a MP3.

I understand about iTunes with the iPod. My question is does it work like our Android phones where I can just download directly to the phone for free through an app?

I am going to agree with Jim, no you will not be able to do that. you will have to download them to your phone from your computer and sync with iTunes.

Have you tried pairing your phone via blue tooth? I see lots of people are having problems with the droid x, mainly having to do with the stock OS. People have rooted there phone and change it to apex 1.3 and have NO issues with connecting to the radio.

I'm not sure how it works with Dodge but with Ford Sync I bluetooth my phone so I can do hands free calling. For music though, I just leave an 8GB thumb drive ($20) plugged into the USB at all times. Much easier than having to plug in your phone every time you get in the car. I just sit down and drive away and everything works perfectly.

That is the way to do it. I have had a 20 gig hard drive in my VW for about 7 years now. I love it. My radio thinks its a cd changer and I have thousands of tunes at my finger tips!

Not sure exactly what you're referring to LM2. Are you talking about streaming music threw an app like iHeart Radio or AOL or the others? You talking downloading music to your device (purchase) threw an App store or via an App purchase while on the go? Or!! Are you talking streaming your music collection remotely and hosting on a home network or uploaded to remote server?

It has to be one of the three and yes you can do it with the iPhone 4.

Neither shack, he is talking about an app that lets you download music to your device for free.

Ohhh! Stealing music! I see said the blind man. grin

Can not help with that and YES, the iPhone (unless jail broken) would not allow this unless of course you find an app in the Apple store that does this of course. smile

I always use to call it borrowing. I haven't done that in years. I was going to say for iPhone it would have to be jail broken as well but wasn't sure if that worked for iTunes music. my understanding is that when you jail broke an iPhone you also downloaded a file that had ever application on it.

I went back and reread LM2's second post. I would guess he is trying to access his home PC/Network to hear his music from home:

LogMeIn works actually better than you would think on the iPhone. For a free app it is one of the best I have used. I have never tried to hear sound threw it though and it is slightly slow on the 3G but makes up for it when you can connect to WiFi.

I use LogMeIn on my Droid X to do invoicing, emailing past due invoices to customers from the office computer while standing in front of the customer, sending bids, etc.

On the Droid, there are multiple apps which allow you to download music, without charges. Virtually any and all songs are available, from VeggieTales to opera to Coldplay to Metallica to Hank 3 to whatever. There's even a Gummi Bear song I play to annoy my kids.

Lawnie. There are several free GPS apps on iPhone, the better ones you will have to pay for. In my opinion, I love my google GPS and I actually use it more than my Garmin. I think I kinda also find a place faster on my phone than I can with my garmin.

Anyone wanna buy a garmin??? lol

As far as why you should stay with a droid? Ask any iphone user that switched to a droid, they switch right back to an iphone because of their comfort level. I think it would be the same if you went form an android to an iphone.

At work two of us have android, one has an iphone and the other has an old school blackberry. The two droids are the only ones that work fluently. We have logmein here at work. how does it work using it on your droid? I am thinking about working from home to avoid driving along the river. I could do all my work from my phone wherever I am if i install that log me in smile

And I do not think google maps is on the iphone. there was talk about it coming to the iphone for free previously, but that has changed now I think.

Now that android is starting to surpass popularity to iphone I doubt google will offer it to iphone for free.

Shack is google maps available for iPhone?

I guess I'll have to check it out.

Either that, or I've been dabbling with rooting my Droid, as I've seen a couple of the threads about running Apex 1.3, but they look and read like they're from the same poster.

Do you have to pay for all apps / games on iPhone? Or are there free ones as well?

PI as said the iPhone has an app for Google Earth. I am totaly twisted up with Google for account home basing, use the main App that acts pretty much like and OS, but just never have got into using Google Earth.

May sound lame, but honestly I just use the default Maps app that comes on the iPhone. It is liked with Google and gets to to where I am going. Plus I can create actual main iPhone contacts from my searches.
