Friday Fish Frys

Heidi

Recommended Posts

We lived in Racine Wi for 4 years and had some of the best fish frys known to man (or woman). Typically in a dive bar where fresh perch caught in Lake Michigan were being brought in by the buckets. Melt in your mouth stuff.

So knowing that will be pretty much impossible to top, I'd also like to hear where everyones favorite fish fry is. For me, its usually on the deck at our place up north.

I only attended once (not catholic, so I don't have to follow this tradition), and I am sure it hasn't been mentioned...

St. Clotilde's in Green Valley, MN has a fish fry every Friday. They have been doing this for years. Always a good crowd. The trick for most will be finding Green Valley. smirk

Come on Leaky, you know the best fishfry ever is at the campsite on Namakan the friday night of the BashKaNam grinwink Even if you don't remember it, LOL!!! wink

Seriously tho for a restaurant, I grew up in LaCrosse WI and we would drive down the river to Stoddard for the all you can east fishfry at Rocky's. I went once with my buddy's from our high school football team's offensive line, and had an eating contest. I ate 22 pieces of their fish. After the 15th piece, the waitress wasn't going to bring me any more, but I protested saying it was "all you can eat". She said, and I quote "yes, but for normal people!"

Well you can bet how that went over. Needless to say I got my fish and all was good!!

Ever try Gabby's Palace in Burlington while you were living in Racine? It would have been fairly close. They have the best fish fry on Fridays. My wife had family in the area and the deal was we could go visit as long as I got to go to the Palace for at least 1 lunch and 1 Friday fish fry.

Xplorer, +1 on Rockies, best fish fry in the upper Midwest, hands down. most I have seen was 15 pieces by a buddy of mine. He also had three cheese curds as well.....needless to say, we all stayed up wind of him the next day

I was young, lean and had a hollow leg back then grin

When we used to take the boat down we used to stop at a small river side place in Brownsville on the way down. They had an appetizer of fried walleye cheeks that were to die for. Can't remember the name for the life of me, but we'd hit there for lunch and then fish our way down to Rocky's for a late fish fry. Those were the days, LOL!! : )

north or south of brownsville or in brownsville. I seem to remember a road house either north or south of brownsville....it had to have been south.....not on the river but tucked into the bluff side of the highway......guess I will have to investigate Brownsville and walleye cheeks though

It was a pretty small place, right on the river. We'd pull in the boats, I want to think they had gas too. I'm sure they're gone by now, its been close to 30 years since the last time I was there. I had just never seen, or seen since, a place that had walleye cheeks for an appetizer. Who knows, maybe they were just small round cut pieces of eye. Many times we were on the "party barge" and the summer hummers were going down pretty good grin

Traprock Inn over in Dresser, WI has an all you can eat deep fried dinner. I believe they use cod. Served with your choice of garlic mash, seasoned french fries, or chips. Haven't had it since the move, and miss it!

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
