Dell XP recovery disk

Recommended Posts

Pureinstanity is correct, a Dell XP CD will work on ANY dell, but not on any other manufacturers PC. Legally, like others mentioned, there are different versions of licensing, some can be transferred to a new PC legally, some are strictly for that PC only.

You need to read the EULA well. MS licensing is for the software, not the hardware. I have a HP/Compaq here, and I installed XP from an old Dell CD which belonged to a system I no longer have since pop got spilled on and fried mboard. I also have my daughter's HP laptop where she lost her software when they moved, I used same Dell CD off my laptop to install, then used her code on bottom of system to register it.

You get 30 days to license it, which you eliminate by calling MS with the license number you have and register the system.

Actually, most of the time the software key is registered to that specific hardware only, and legally should not be put on another PC. Almost all the Dell CD's I use only work on Dell machines, but yes, there are some CD's that will work on non-dell PC's.

Taken from Microsoft regarding the transfer of OEM licenses....

" After an OEM software license has been installed on a PC, the license may not be installed on or transferred to another PC"

So you can use the CD to reinstall software on a computer that already had its own license for that specific software, but you cannot legally reuse a license key on a different PC.

Exactly, just cuz you can do it and make it work, doesn't make it legal. Proceed at your own risk. But then your typical home user won't get busted, but just know that you are breaking the law and if caught(unlikely) could result in fines.
