Humminbird 798 SI questions

TurnUpTheFishing

Question

Well I finally found a deal on a SI unit and pulled the trigger. I got last years version of the 798. First off can this unit do the down imaging or is that a feature only found on the current model? Also, how does one update the software and do I really need to? What will the updates do for me?

You're going to like your bird. You'll need to do the free update to get the down imaging features. Updates in 2011 will also offer the following:

* Contour / Terrain Mode - side images are joined, water column is subtracted

* SI / Navigation split screen

* Down Imaging Zoom

* Side Imaging Range Line

To update you will need to go to humminbirds HSOforum and register your unit. You will need a SD card that has enough space for the update and a card reader to put the download on the card.

When finished, just insert the SD card in the Hbird unit and follow the on screen instructions.

It is as simple as it can get, heck, even I can do it.

If you're buying a new SD card anyway, look for a package that includes the amount of memory you want (I'd suggest the most you can afford, and that the unit will recognize.) but is a MicroSD card which inserts into both USB and SD media, which will also be in the pack.

Basically, there's a small card (the MicroSD) that you can insert into the shell of a regular SD card, and into the shell of a USB stick. That way, you can get the data from your computer to your unit with pretty minimal hassle. Of course, you'll want to check the cost of something like this against the cost of just buying the SD card reader.
