moviking
I'v said before about staying on Big Marine Lake. What I want to know is what to fish with for bass that the northerns won't tear up on every cast
LegattoAD
If you find anything, let me know. I haven't thrown anything for bass that a pike didn't decide to eat.
mainbutter
My suggestion is to stick to hard lures and accept the fact that northerns eat up anything that a bass will chow on.If you really want to catch no pike and catch bass, then go fly fishing with panfish poppers. Bass'll attack them sometimes, but they're usually small enough that pike leave them alone.
ShoreGuy1984
Must be a really good northern lake, if you have northerns tearing up your lures, on every cast =D
JBMasterAngler
There are indeed lots of pike on big marine, which is why I almost exclusively use hard baits...orange/brown spinnerbait with gold blade is my #1 bait.
moviking
thanks for the info. Didn't really think I would find anything the pike would leave alone. Anyway I will try my hand up there for 3 weeks in August
Fever
I can tell you what not to use. Shallow cranks like the mini minus one's. I lose several each year but still use em.... talk about smart. Bass do like them but I think Pike like em more. I'd suggest swim baits maybe as you probably wont get bit off as often but you'd still catch pike on em and they'd prob get ripped up... tough situation. Sorry cant help. Crm7290
Dont try frogs either. With bass they survive a while but then pike get in the mix and you have a useless frog with holes...
Fever
Maybe try to think it through differently... not so much what to use but where to fish. The real only thing I can suggest is to try to fish in locations that pike don't often hang out. Or as often I guess as they do obviously intermingle. Places like - Under docks, in thick weed pockets, under pads. Bass are more ambush preditors and will typically be in thicker stuff as they can have extreme quick short bursts, while Pike are anatomically designed to be out on the edge of the weeds more and can attain a faster overall speed and sustain it for longer periods of time because of their shape. Not sure if this helps but it is something to think about... Again, not so much what lures to use or not but where to cast the lures you like to use. Sorry cant help. I catch more pike on paddletail soft swimbaits than I do bass! I rarely am able to catch more than one pike per swimbait though, so it's not really worth it for the $.
