Yes, that is also the regulator and presure controle. They should never meelt or get a back burn in them to allow a melt. I would contact Mr. Heater, they should make that right with you.

If not, then the control will cost you about $18 if you find one in a store.

I once had a bit of a fire from my connections where the hose and fitting from the tank hook up to the heater. It was not totally tight and it leaked a bit of gas from the loose connection and started a fire. I turned the tank valve off and tightened up the fitting and all was ok. The fire did melt an edge on my knob control but not enough to hurt it.

I do not know if this is where it leaked for you but this can and does happen.

I melted one once. Somehow the flame worked its way back to the tank. whole thing was a big fireball. I thought about fixing it, but just went and bought a new one and use the old one for parts.

Edit: I shouldn't say it "worked its way back". There were multiple ignition sources near and the bottom was lit inadvertently.

Dont know where the fire was..but one other thing.if you have a clog or partial blockage in the venturi it will cause it to burn back and you could have a flame coming out the round holes on the side of the pipe that runs from the regulator down to the burner. (that tube is the venturi)
