Opening Day Tactics

Hey Guys,
Just wondering what everyones favorite opening day tactics are. This is the third year I have been to The Whitefish Chain and have enjoyed moderate success. We have found fish both deep and shallow, and most my success has been pulling original rapala's in about 6-9 feet of water. Most our fish have been smaller males and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to find the big girls this early in the season.

Really depends on where the fish are, but last year I did very well fishing slip bobbers with leeches in about 10ft of water off the weedlines. Couldnt get them jigging or trolling, but they loved the lively leeches.

I'll be up in Ely trolling with original raps behind planer boards. Fish should be real shallow. I expect as well to catch a lot of smaller males and maybe a laker or two. As far as the big girls, we'll just have to wait and see.

I am going out a midnight, so hopefully I will have the opportunity to do some shallow casting. If it is too busy I suppose I will either troll rapalas or spinners with worms or leaches.

I`ll be draggin a nice fathead across the bottom(with my secret jighead )for them 2-3lbers best of luck to all fmers! on opening day ....it`ll be exciting to read the post on mon.,tues.

I will start off using the 1/2oz Foam Walker(standing slip sinker)with a phelps floater and a leech in the 6 to 10 foot depth. Then when the sun starts to drop I will have the boat anchored in ten feet of water and have the Wave Buster Bobber and a leech set for night fishing in 7 to 8 feet of water. Insert a 3mm glow stick into the top of the Wave Buster Bobbber and smile when I see it disappear into the dark cold depths of Walleyeville! Hopefully the bullheads won't be tugging on my bobber. First of all, gotta say I've always loved opening weekend, but sensing the excitement in these forums and sharing the preparation with fellow FMers makes it even better.
I'll get started by trolling crawlers on spinners to find the fish, then tossing whatever they seem to want to find the buguns!

I will be sitting on my dock on Little Pine in Perham. Let shiners sit out there and watch the line. I catch walleyes and northerns every year. Never been in a boat for the opener.

I'm with you Hoss. Best place to be on opener is my dock. Too much boat traffic.
Toss out a slip bobber rig and relax.
