Looking for some advice on what to get for turkey hunting. I have never done this before and my brother and I are going to try it this year. I am a bowhunter so I have some stuff already.

Here is what I have so far...

Mathews switchback

NAP bloodrunner broadheads

thunderhead broadheads

3 hang on tree stands

camoflage clothes

camoflauge rain gear

Camoflauge gloves and facemask

binoculars

I know I need to get a call but am not sure which type? ground blind? decoys?

Please help

I would go with a box call if you don't wanna practice much(probably the easiest and most simple). A friction or slate call is easy just takes a little practice. Or a diaphragm, which I would say is probably the most difficult.

No matter what call you decide on half the of the choices you have at GM or Cab's will come with a DVD for help... And you still have A few months for practicing.

A good blind is a must for bowhunting turkeys. Being brushed in and proper color isn't as important for turkey hunting so I would buy something you can use for deer hunting too.(As far as color and straps for cover or branches)

As far as decoys go, I bought the Pretty boy last year and had great success with it. But any foam decoy could work but the more life-like the better.

Hope this helps a little...

Last year was my first time turkey hunting. I had a small piece of property and used two ground blinds. I had 3 trail cameras on the property and they patterned better then deer did this fall. I used my Mathews Drenalin @ 59#'s with Rage 3 Blade 100 grain broad heads. They did lots of damage but I also had to do a follow up shot because he took off through the woods. I actually called him over to me using Knight and Hale's Ultimate Fighting Purr Call. The call is very very easy to use and worked wonders on my bird. I did use a ground blind and I put it out about 3 weeks before season started and I shot my bird full strut at 5 yards! I used a cheapo decoy but I don't think he even saw the decoy because I actually called a hen up to me and she was full sprint and he got mad and followed her 60 yards in the woods to my spot.

I strongly suggest scouting and using cameras if you have the luxury. When I mean they were patterned they were almost to the minute every day. I had 3 toms on camera and I noticed they came through about 7:45-8:15 10-11 1:30-2:30 and again before dusk. I was in the blind EARLY and the woods were alive with them coming off of the roost and wow does that get your heart beating. I shot mine by 8 am and he was the 5th bird I had seen that morning! A friend of mine said if your hunting and you find where they are roosting and you have multiple people do not hunt right at the roosting area. He said if you shoot one where they roost they will move roosting places. I had never heard this before but makes sense.

Hope you get your application in by Friday unless your going just for the late archery season. I'm excited to see the results of the drawing and the application date hasn't closed yet!
