Broadheads for Bear?

Recommended Posts

I have shot close to a dozen bears with a bow, some with fixed blades and others with mechanical blades. I have also helped others track about a ten more. One thing I will say is that they all require a good broadside or near broadside shot at a good angle. I had one mechanical kick out on an angled shot I took when I rushed the shot. It started cutting with one blade at the top of the back and followed the outside of the ribs down to the front leg. It then entered the front leg and blew threw the leg bone and severed the artery. I recovered the bear with an awesome blood trail but not from where I wanted the blood to come from.

All of the bears were trackable with either fixed or mechanical heads but the mechanical heads left a far better blood trail to follow. Most bears I have shot have only gone about 30-50 yards and when they crash you have a pretty good idea as to where they are, but when you can not hear it go down or the death moan I would be happier with a mechanical blood trail to follow. One other thing to consider is the shots are generally short and the bear has a heavy thick coat of hair and fat to clog the entrance and exit holes, so bigger may be better.

I've shot two bears and both of them quickly exited exactly where they came in.

I used a 2 blade Rage this year and the bear made it 20 yards. I haven't had any animal travel more than 40 yards after being shot with these broadheads.
