Going to try for trout for the first time this hardwater season. Probably plan on joining the crazies on Cenaiko for the opener and maybe drop a line in the other designated waters around the state.

Any simple hints? Fishing for Lakers, is it just a drill and move kind of thing or sit/wait approach?

Not all trout lakes are "designated" lakes. So on some, you are allowed to use 2 lines and live minnows...square and christmas lakes being an example. Cenaiko is designated however, so only 1 line and no live minnows.

As far as lakers go, there is a great thread in the BWCA forum called inland laker tactics (or something to that effect), will tell you anything you need to know about icing a lake trout.

But yeah, basically use your panfish gear for stream trout.

if you do go to cenaiko, fish shallow. i have cought trout there in two or three feet of water. i have used euro larva on panfish jigs for the most part. if you see trout go by your bait, try dropping a plain hook with a couple of euro larva on the bottom. many times they will pick them up the bottom more than suspended. if you want rainbows, browns, and lake trout try grindstone. i have cought all of those plus pike, smelt, and crappies in 80ft of water suspended 30ft down. rainbows and browns are within 10ft under the ice in deeper water and you would have better luck with them in shallow water in winter in 10ft or less. i have had good days and poor days on this lake but the fish are there. you do not need a trout stamp but if you want to keep trout you must have one. live bait is alowed. good luck.
