New wheel house ideas/comments

I'm in the market for a new wheel house to keep up at LOW during the ice season. I know it's a bit late in the season to start now but I'll at least have a good start for next year. I'm looking for ideas and advice on size, floor plan and anything else related. I'd like to buy the frame and then finish the rest on my own. I've looked on line at several different companies who manufacture just the frames already. Around $2000 is the going rate for the v-fronts, which I think are a bit over priced. Are there any companies that manufacture frames and/or frame and shell around NW Minnesota? I'm also debating on having the wheels inset or on the outside of the house. Also, I only have a 1/2 ton truck so any house size that requires a tractor to move is out of the question. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I would highly recommend 8' wide x whatever length you want. On the 8' wide house the wheels will follow in line with your truck, giving you a huge advantage over the 6.5' wide in snow.

Check out my 2010 Fish House Build post for some ideas. I haven't posted final pics, but will in the next day or so.

Since that post, I also built an 8x14 + 3' v for a friend. It is almost the same as mine, except for the extra 2' of length, a window on the back wall, and the door is on the drivers side. I'll try to find my pictures of that one, too.

As far as frames, you honestly get what you pay for. I spent lots of hours looking into all the frames out there, including the cheapies on the classified site by Craig. If I were looking into a 8' wide crank down, I would look at the Shack Rack frames (check out a post from 2009 by SapperACE). They are single winch at the tongue(instead of 3 winches), with a linkage that connects to the axle. This will save you from making 2 or 3 trips around your house to drop it all the way to the ice. For $450 more, you can get a full hydraulic setup from Shack Rack. The other frames I would consider with hydraulics are from Innovative Recreation, or Berkon.

Maybe I'm missing something. But wouldn't the wheel base on an 8 be about the same as on the 6.5? Since the wheels are inset on the 8, outside on the 6.5?

When considering the length of your house think about the lake accesses that you will be using. The steeper access the shorter you will want your house to be otherwise you'll be dragging the back side down the slope.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
