Ancient Fish Trap ID

I have a really old and totally destroyed Fish Trap sitting out behind my garage. I know you can buy replacement tents for older models. I'm wondering if there is any way I can tell what model number this was. My best guess is gen 2 but maybe someone can shed some light. All printing and logos are gone from the tent. Any ideas?

I have one like you're talking about too. I wanna say it's Dave Genz Fish Trap Guide ?? Could very well be wrong though.

Personally I think the seating ROCKS! Best system I've used for getting gear in and out easily and I can just set the auger on top when I'm walking and dont need to worry about rod bags being smashed. I swear the house funnels wind right in though.

The Guide had the newer non-canvas fabric. If it's canvas, it's likely the Trap II. The Guide was the model that replaced the Trap II.

I looked into getting a new tent for my Trap II several years ago before changing over to Otter, and the only tent available from Clam was the Guide, which was close (a little big, if memory serves). I could have made it work, though. And I loved that seating. Much better than what replaced it, IMO.

If a new tent is required, I'd look into taking it to a tent/awning company to see what it would cost to duplicate it. Odds are it would be so expensive that you could find a much newer design for about the same price used.

By the time I passed my Trap II on to the next guy, it had about 20 patches in three or four different colors, all welded on with hot melt glue. I also glued in strips of canvas to take care of the gaps along the base/tub. It's still out there on the ice fishing, too. smile

But you really need to post pics of it from several angles while it's set up for us to be sure which it is.

We must have the same house but I can't remember the name...

It must be the same house because mine funnels wind in. I put a couple pieces of conduit in the bottom flaps to hold it down, but it needs about 6 more inches of material to close up gaps around the corners of the sled.

some backrests would be nice too.

i'll see if i can dig up some pics or take one of it in the garage.

It sounds like it's the Trap II. My father had the Guide years ago and that's not it. I don't need it for fishing. I have a Yukon that I love and a few Pak Shaks too. It was left to us by my wife's father and I though maybe I could get 'er going again. I wouldnt want to put much cash into it. I haven't checked yet and its buried now, but I bet the sled is scraped up anyway. Oh well. Maybe its my new firewood hauler. Anyone need some old style poles?

if it is a fish trap 2 that was replaced by the guide like was stated but the guide was replaced by the nanook. they all had the same dimensions. the good thing about it being the same as a nanook is that it gives you a option to get a full thermal nanook tent or the regular non thermal. that would be your best bet for a replacement.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
