so i hadnt charged my vex battery since about july i'd say, then i left it out in the garage(when i usually just keep it stored inside). and now i charged it for about 2 hours, the battery indicator says almost out of battery, the thing is turning cuz i can hear it, but nothing on the screen. when i plug it in the red charging light doesnt even come on. did i screw it up, does it need a really long charge or do i need a new battery or something?

Leave it on the charger for several days, it should recover. If it will not charge fully after 4 - 5 days, it is likely time for a new battery.

I do not suspect anything else, just very low voltage, and a very low battery.

While the battery is being fully charged, you can easily hook the Vex to another 12 V source, and confirm the unit is working ok.

throw it on the charger over the weekend and if you don't get a charge by then, i'd say its time for a new battery

extra batteries are pretty cheap and it is not a bad idea to pick up a extra one. you never know when you or someone in your fishing party is going to run into a dead battery and it is always really nice to have a backup. if you do find you can salvage the battery you have, maybe it can serve as your backup

My battery Indicator has gone a little nuts, it happend about 2 yrs ago (my vex would be about 6 yrs old then fl-8) and right after i take it off the charger the batt indicator goes to 50-90 or whatever the second light is, and its a brand new battery. So it might just be a little screwey. give it a try out on the ice, but like everyone else said an extra battery is really nice.

my fl-20 was doing this this year and i kept messing with it, i think i realized that the charger was pluged into an extention cord, maybe not your problem. but then i pluged in the charger to an outlet first then hooked up the cables then turned it on and it seemed to work after that. since then i've been trying to kill the battery again so i can charge it back up. my wife gets a little anoyed when i'm runnung it while we're trying to watch tv, lol

I had a the same problem a couple of weeks ago, I tried charging the battery three or four different times (the charger indicated the battery was full). I hooked up an older battery I had laying around and it worked like a charm. Took the dead battery into the dirty C word and exchanged it for a brand new one (my new back up battery).

so i charged it overnight, then 12 hours while at work today. indicator showed very bottom "on" light, but the vex turned on and screen flashed. turned it off and 2 minutes later i turned it on and it spun but not flasher lights. ill keep it charged through the weekend and likely but a 2nd battery anyways as it will be nice to have 2, plus then ill know if thats the issue.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
