I can only speak about snowshoe hares... They are almost pure white right now (we got one last weekend that had a surprising amount of brown on him still, but most have been almost pure white), so they will blend into their surroundings, but if they are out in the open they stand out surprisingly well. Most should have some permanent runs (trails used all winter) going into brush piles and in tall grasses on swamp edges (jack pine swamps are usually fail safe options, and spruce swamps hold bunnies, too). If you want to hunt them, grab a partner and a .22 and stomp brush piles. It's best if one guy stays back to watch the pile while one stomps it...then take your shot as they come out. Challenging, but fun. Should you follow trails? As a rule, no. Especially one set of tracks--even if they are fresh, it could just be one lone rabbit circling around, and if it is fresh, he will hear you coming from a long ways away and manage to stay ahead of you or circle around you. However, if you see a well-used trail, you can follow that right up to the brush piles they like to hide in. Stomp brush piles, and you can’t go wrong.
