Any ducks left (south metro)

Recommended Posts

I hunted NE metro a few mornings this week, had a lot of mallards in the area, just not liking my decoys. Frustrating. Today I went out and there were far fewer birds, not sure if a bunch decided to leave town or what. I am still going to try this weekend in the mornings since the lake I hunt hasn't iced over yet.

Saw 3 big flocks of mallards (100+) early in the morning, not interested in decoys at all. They knew exactly where they were going. 1 nice flock of mallards decoyed into the guys next to us, some divers around still. Saw some mergansers and swans but not much for mallards. Ended with 1 greenhead and 1 can. Shoulda had a couple more but I could say that every hunt grin

You know there aint much for ducks around when you show up to the zoo and ur the 4 vehicle laugh Not many hunters and not many ducks

What's crazy is I forgot duck season was even open, none of us saw any birds deer hunting, since August 1st I saw 2 wood ducks and 1 mallard and have ponds and a river running through my farm, 3 ducks at this farm for the entire fall and would guess I'm outside 5 of the 7 days looking for any wildlife at sunup and sundown except during deer season I head north, good luck there must be some somewhere.

Went out this morning in the SW metro. Had a few flocks of Mallards somewhat interested until the dog started jumping around. Saw a pair of goldeneyes and 2 flocks (40-50 birds in each) of geese all flying high. Ended the hunt with 2 geese. I'm getting excited for this cold snap to kick these birds in the butt next week.

Hunted in the north metro this morning. Saw two small flocks of mallards and few small flocks of divers. The divers seemed wary and stayed out of range. I managed one mallard for the morning. Had a lone goose fly over 5 min before shooting time, and saw another local flock I was expecting that stayed out of range. Could have had a few more but I wasn't setup in the right place.

Hunted just south of the metro yesterday. Lots of swans! Quite a few mergs

And goldies. Had a flock of 15 or so mallars drop from the stratosphere

Right on top of us, that was fun! Saw a couple flocks of divers. The real show

Was the 6 - 700 mallards coming of the fields ( of course that started 5 mins after

Closing time ).

well, glad i gave it a try today...had to break ice on the way out but the limit of greenies was well worth it. not sure if the lake will be open tomorrow tho since it was 1/2 locked up this morning.

There are most definitely still birds around in the S Metro. Marion was holding a ton of Geese along with Mallards Thursday and Friday. One of the hidden gem private ponds was also holding several hundred Birds too and will hopefully with the great number of Ducks and Geese will remain open for a bit here. The fields East of the local airport were filled with Geese with close to 3,000 Thursday and Friday if I were to guess. Quite a few less Geese around this morning "sat" based on the numbers we saw today in our Field but still plenty of Goose and Mallard field action to be had in the S Metro!
