SM COMPRESSION BUTTON

Myrt

Question

I've been starting my SM Lazer Pro once a week the past 3 weeks just to keep it warmed up and I'm noticing oil slowly leaking out of the compression button, not much, but enough to notice it. Is this right?

Same here, if it's just a small amount it's not enough to worry about. I also ALWAYS use the de-comp button to shut off my auger, not the rocker switch. I heard that tip from D-Rock to help minimize the recoil-shredding kickback.

I also ALWAYS use the de-comp button to shut off my auger, not the rocker switch.

I have small amount of oil also. I tried the de-comp shut off last year and the darn thing wouldn't shut off, just ran badly but wouldn't shut off. I have no idea why or what made the difference but I switched to AMSOIL late last year and now the de-comp shut off works also. I was worried in July as I pulled the auger out and had not vented the gas cap and left gas in it. I moved and left it at my parents and forgot to vent it, well it started hard and was spewing fuel mixture from everywhere on the power head that it could. It would spray out the exhaust when I pulled the rope and acted like it was flooded bad (which I'm sure it was). I can only guess as I don't know enough about small engines that not having it vented built up pressure and pushed fuel into the motor somehow. It did finally start and I wiped it down and started it every months since no problem. This will be it's 3rd full year so at the end of this year I think I may get it tuned up and cleaned, hoping it doesn't need it sooner.

I don't think that having the vent closed would "force" gas into the cylinder, but maybe it could; I've never seen that. If you had gas shooting out of the exhaust, I'd try a new spark plug maybe. I'm on my 5th year with my SM (same plug), and it has always shut off from the decomp button. I did try a new one from 3 years ago (not a solo but a tec.) on it's first startup in the garage, and it would not shut off from the decomp button, either. Breakin period maybe? Looser factory rings on the the piston from the shredded recoil issue they had? Who knows. I do know that if I don't use the decomp button, I'll snap the rope or pull something in my back!

My decomp button won't shut off my SM either, so I just choke it out. In fact the switch on the handle is broke, but it's broke ON. I figure that is a good way to leave it, sure better than the alternative.

Are any of you guys running the solo motors? Or are you using the Tecs?

I'm running the solo but haven't noticed any oil coming from the button.

Nevermind... I made a point to check the button when starting it this weekend and I did notice a small amount of oil around the button. That Amsoil sounds like the ticket. I would like to make the switch this year.
