Handguns for deer hunting?

Recommended Posts

I was asked about hunting deer with handguns and there were questions as to what area, minimum size caliber, hunting with handguns in shotgun zone.

So I whips out my Minnesota Hunting & Trapping Regulation Handbook and there is little to nothing said about the above questions!

Anybody care to chime in? confused

You can use handguns statewide. I bought a Thompson Encore in .243 a few years back. Before I bought I asked a CO about using a rifle caliber in the slug zone as a handgun. He told me it was legal to use as long as it was a handgun. I have never used it in the slug zone though. I personally didnt feel like it was safe to use in this area. I usually hunt in the rifle zone, but when I do hunt in the slug zone I use a .357 mag. To expand on what Tator said, I believe the calibers are .22 and up and centerfire only. No rimfire.
