Garage door opener

Recommended Posts

Anyone know what's wrong when you push the button on your opener and the door starts to go down but, than goes back? It does on the the remotes and the hard wired button. Everything looks good track, rollers, door itself is straight.

If you hold the button down you can get the door closed. Openning the door everything works ok. Ideas? Thanks.

3 things to check.

pull the lever to release the opener. Move the door manually, make sure the door slides nicely without much resistance.

check the sensors. sometimes if they are barely lined up, the shaking of the frame will cause the beam to get off line and tell it to go back up.

Check the force adjustment on the opener, you may just have to give it a little more juice.

(if you change the force adjustment, make sure to test the door to make sure it will still reverse if it does hit something. Dont want any little kids getting nailed by it.)

The two "eyes" need to line up. One sends a beam of light, the other receives it. If either got bumped then they will send and receive and the opener will think something is underneath it so it won't shut. Just look at them and try to "sight" down each one and make sure they are aiming right.

If this isn't the problem, then try adjusting the "down force" which is usually a set screw on the side of the opener. It should be somewhere in the middle.

It could be that when the door starts to go down the rail flex a bit, and takes the eyes out of line. I had this happen once. Try taking eyes off the rails, then line them up on floor, ideally next to each other, and if it works, then you know it is flexing in rails. Prolly not, but a free and easy thing to try to make sure. Good luck.

Here is a little tip: If you have any bit of common sense (and your kids aren't a few cokes short of a 12 pack) don't be afraid to line the eyes up right next to each other above the opened. You may not want to do this to your main garage, but if you have a shed or storage garage I would highly recommend it. Now if you don't have a lot of common sense and you would be worried that this would somehow harm you someday in someway, don't do it.
