Gaining Weight

JJK

Recommended Posts

He looks a little thin. There is no sudden weight loss or change of diet/eating habits.

He is a 16 month old German Wirehair, lean athletic build and runs at least an hour a day. I always keep food in the bowl and he eats whenever he wants.

My 5 month old gsp was getting 1 1/2 cups two times a day, but he seemed a little thin as well with ribs showing so I started upping his portions to almost 2 cups twice a day last week being he is out running and hunting quite a bit now.

We'll probbly back down again by christmas with lower activity etc.

When my gsp was a pup I gave her as much food as she wanted. I still always have a bowl of food out yet she is still on the thin side, I don't see too many fat gsps. I'm not trying to hijack your post but what do you guys do to put more weight on your dog. I can see pretty much all her ribs, she is a very active dog but I'd like to see a little more weight on her. I feed her diamond extreme athelete.

I havent switched foods (and dont plan to) but you could look for a food that has higher fat count. I feed our Orijen and my lab is maintaining a nice build/weight with 1 1/2 cups twice a day. This is my first gsp, so not sure how they are suppose to look in relation to the ribs showing, but if I put a large bowl down and let him eat, he would eat non stop...he is a vaccume cleaner. I do like the lean mean look, but yet want to make sure he is getting all the nutrition he needs.
