Riddled with BB

Recommended Posts

I was hunting private land Sat, I had a spread of decoys out, and blinded in some thick cattails. Around five sat night I saw a hunter approaching the pond I was hunting, Thinking to myself that there shouldn't be anyone else on the land, since I own it, and never gave anyone permission to hunt, he rose his gun and fired at my decoys. I did not have time to even let him know I was there. As he rose the gun, I knew he was about to shoot I covered my head, and heard a bang followed by BB's hitting me as well as my decoys. I was scared to look up in fear of another shot. After a little bit with no shot, I stood up, and the hunter took off running. I tried to track him with no luck. The whole incident took a matter of seconds. I never had anything like this happen to me before, But, I will think twice when I jump shoot a pond, making sure I would be shooting at a live bird.

I talked to all adjacent Landowners, no one knows who could of pulled the trigger. Hopefully they learned something as well.

Nickster First off I glad your not in the hospital recovering from gun shot wounds Secondly a Big Welcome to the HSO family.

Hope he didnt blast up to many of your decoy either.

These are the guys that give the sport a bad name in my eyes and not everyone is like that hope thatyou find out who did this and have a talk with them.

I just returned from the NoDak and this is what some guys do but they pull off the road jump out of the truck and blast away at the ducks in the pond I've seen it and to me thats not waterfowling and any real waterfowler will tell you that.

Might not be a bad idea to report this incident to the authorities. Unlikely that they can do anything, but it's possible they could link this up with other trespass reports in the area or work of some other leads.

Glad to hear you didn't end up in the hospital, not the way you'd want to end an afternoon hunt that is for sure!

Same thing occurs in the Minnesota on the grouse roads. I have heard reports that road hunting is real bad this year with the new laws on casing guns, that is not needing to case guns.

Same thing occurs in South Dakota on ringnecks.

Yeah, you can scarcely hunt anywhere in Itasca County without seeing a few of those parties. Just this week, I was on a SNOWMOBILE trail and a truck comes driving up real slow...they were shooting birds. They stopped to talk to me for a second and the passenger was actually holding a shell in his hand so his gun would be technically unloaded, but ready none-the-less for a bird.

I think road hunting is lazy meathogging, but it doesn't bother me as much as the same activity from an ATV because the guys in the truck were at least limited on where they could go.

I think reporting it would be good. Also maybe even a note to Dennis Anderson or Niskanen. Even though it makes the rest of us hunters look bad, I think that having these things publicized probably does help educate others.

In this case there are a few things this other person could learn:

1) Don't F-ing trespass!

2) Don't shoot at stuff unless you can identify it (kinda helps if its alive as well).

3) Everyone has their own litmus test but I'm not a huge fan of water swatting birds.

4) There really isn't a 4 but I guess I got rolling! grin

It is good you didn't get seriously hurt though - hope you have a good safe the rest of the season.

I had 6 decoys set in a drainage ditch 150 yards off road, I was sitting in grass and had a guy sneak up on me and shoot 1 decoy and then pump and shoot another one. I yelled he ran away yelling sorry!

I know who it was and he is our village [PoorWordUsage] and it shows, every town has one!!!!

I talked to a Deputy, and he'll file a report. He told me it was a good idea to get a hold of him, because if I left it alone, sometime down the road someone could get seriously hurt. By reporting it I have taken the appropriate action, and may prevent further incidences like this one from happening. Also, I found out I need to post my land on all four sides, and not just road side. He also told me that trespassing seems to be an everyday issue for the landowners, and law enforcement. Thanks for the input, and happy, and safe hunting.
