Duty tax on beer

Recommended Posts

I know this is somewhere in the vast response but I am going to ask anyway. Anyone know first hand what the duty is going into Sask. We have 4 going and each bringing a case of beer. We may bring extra and if so what is the tax? Chance are we will only bring 4 and buy plenty of beer in Canada. Thanks for anyones help.

From: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5082-eng.html#s5x1

You are allowed to import only one of the following amounts of alcoholic beverages free of duty and taxes:

* 1.5 litres (53 imperial ounces) of wine; or

* a total of 1.14 litres (40 ounces) of alcoholic beverages; or

* up to 8.5 litres of beer or ale.

8.5 liters = 8500 milliliters

one 12oz can = 355 milliliters

8.5 liters = just a hair under 24 cans

bobbymalone is correct that one case is free per person. Last time we went (few years ago) the tariff was just about the price of the case of beer but yet cheaper than buying beer up there. So to answer your question - I don't know. crazy

Last year they didn't bother charging us for the extra cases we brought. We told them we had two cases each fully expecting to pay duty and we were never charged for it. This year I am going to bring 2 liters of rum instead with the expectation of paying duty.

We paid tax of about $7-9 per case. However we bought at the duty free shop (in Baudette)and they have really good prices on beer plus no US tax. I think we had about 9 cases for three guys and total cost including Canada duty was about $21 bucks a case (included 3 duty-free cases as we had 3 guys).

When we went through in June we paid about 58% of the original cost of the case of beer for both the "Duty" and what they call "Provincial Liquor Mark-up". For example a $10 case of beer would have duty and mark-up of $5.80 for a total of $15.80. Booze was much higher about 112%. A $10 liter bottle of "bourbon whiskey" would cost $11.20 in fees for a total for the bottle of $21.20. I have the receipt right in front of me. This was Ontario through I-Falls.
