Fluorocarbon line quirkiness?

H2O Milfoil

I spooled up a few rigs this past spring with fluorocarbon line...4#, 6#, and 8#. I have been outfishing my buddies in my boat with similar rigging, but they haven't been using fluorocarbon. One or two of the guys think its because I'm using fluoro. Of course, it's really because I'm a badder-ashed fisherman than those guys! That is not the question.

What I have noticed is that the fluoro seems to fray, or delaminate, in the 2 feet above the tie off to my bait, or where I clip on a bobber. Some of the frayed filaments are 1/2 inch long. Anybody else notice this? I let it go for a while before I clip and retie. But it seems to be a characteristic of fluoro, as I have used a couple of different brands. If I saw that kind of wear or fraying with normal mono, it would definitely weaken the line to the point it would break when I tugged on it. The fluoro seems stronger, not breaking even when frayed. Almost like a super braid. I just don't like seeing the fraying. Oh, and this happens on 4 different fishing rods, so I don't think it's a bad rod guide.

Is it just me, or is anyone else seeing this?

I've noticed the same thing on 14/6 Fireline that I've been trolling with this summer. It's fraying in the area where I've been attaching clip weights. I like the line alot other than that and I suppose every line has limits. For a test though, I've since switched to Power Pro on one rod to see if it frays in the same mann=er. I'm told that the rounder shape of the line is also an advantage for Power Pro but the jury is still out with me on if it frays or not. So far I see no difference in performance from one to the other.

Are you using floro line or leader? I use leader material and have never seen this. Leader material is much more abrasive resistant than regular line but much more expensive. If your using it for leaders than try actual floro leader. This may help.
