harvey lee
I have been having the sames issues on both my laptop and the vomputer for slow spped for about a month.I would go to my e-mails and at times it would not work. I would log onto the internet and it may work and maynot. Now, all of a sudden after a month or so, both the desktop and the laptop work great and the speed is also fine. What in the world changes?I was going to simply blame my provider Frontier as it seems they are always the cause of my issues. Thanks
upnorth
Harvey from what you described, both PC and laptop having troubles with the same things and those things being internet based, I am going to say Frontier(your ISP I assume) is the cause of your woes. If your internet access it down neither your web browser nor email app will work properly if at all. Best plan when something like that goes down is to power down and power up all the gear between your PC and where the ISP brings their wire in. Be that router and their "modem" or whatever equipment you have. You would be surprised at how often that will relieve the problem. If that doesn't do it give them a call, most will do what they can to help you resolve the problem, whether it is settings or hardware(theirs) issues. Jim Almquist
Harvey now that things are running good you should go to Speakeasy Speed Test and pick a town ( I always pick Chicago ) and see what your download and upload speeds are and write them down so the next time you have a problem you will be able to find out if it is your problem or there's. I had a problem with mine and thought for sure it was a Qwest problem and had a appointment with them to come out and fix the problem. They thought it was inside wiring so I disconnected everything but one jack and still had a problem so I took apart the jack and low and behold it had corrosion on the jack. Replaced the jack and my problem was gone.
harvey lee
Typically I have to reboot my modem and then its ok.
Jim Almquist
If you have to reboot the modem more then once a month I would call and see if there is a good reason or have them come out and replace the modem because it may very well be faulty and causing you to run at slower speeds all the time. harvey lee
The problem is it use to fix any issues and now rarely does it fix itself. I am going to call Frontier as i'll bet I have a bad modem. Seems to work when it wants to.
UMC
If it's ok I'll post a similar problem. My desktop PC started being very slow on the internet about a week ago. Other programs non-internet related work just fine on it. I have a laptop that connects wirelessly to the internet and it is working at normal speed on the internet. I've tried rebooting the modem and checking connections. Any idea of possible problems?
Jim Almquist
You could always shut off the wireless connection on the laptop and connect it to the Ethernet port on the modem and see if has the same problem. If it has the same problem it is the modem and if it works with no problems it might very well be your NIC card (Network Interface Card) on the computer. If it is built on to the motherboard you can always buy a different one and disable the one on the motherboard.
upnorth
Start by deleting all your history, cookies and temporary internet files. If that doesn't do much run a Virus scan, then a anti malware scan (malwarebytes). Lastly try a disk defrag, I have on PC here that I have to defrag regularly or my webrowser runs slooooowwww.. If all else fails you could try a new web browser, Firefox, Opera or Google Chrome.Under most circumstances your hardwared NIC will be at least twice as fast as your wireless. pureinsanity
As a customer for years with frontier. I will say its there slow DSL.... I often would find myself rebooting the modem as it would just go out. Once I got comcast i havent had an issue unless there is a major outage
spearchucker
My parents have Frontier and it isn't the greatest, but no other option where they are at.
UMC
Well, I had tried everything I could over the course of the last week or so and nothing seemed to work so I decided to call my provider last night. I was waiting on hold and all of a sudden my Internet started working fast again - no idea what happened but I hope it stays this way! It was intermittant and went completely out. They found a corroded connection in the intface box on the house or pole.
pureinsanity
Is there a DSL filter on the phone line to the modem? Sometimes that can cause problems.
