Coyote Tips and Help...

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody, I am looking to do some coyote hunting this year, it will be my first. I've been deer, turkey and duck hunting all my life and looking to branch out a bit. Last year I got a 300+ acre parcel for bowhunting, however, from late October til the end of the year I saw more coyotes than deer. I was even able to shoot two with my bow. God knows how many would have got had I had my .223 with me instead. They were everywhere, and never saw the nice bucks that were on my trail-cams. So I'm looking to do a little management this year.

I've seen the predator shows on the Outdoor channel, and I know I could just go to Gander or Cabelas and buy some DVDs, but I don't want the sales pitches to get the newest, latest, and most expensive equip. I've read the posts and there are alot of knowledgable and experienced hunters here whose brains I'd like to pick.

A few ?'s... Good calls to use? Calling frequency? use of lights? How about decoys? Cutouts? shaking? Times to hunt? dawn, dusk, midnight? And what about setups? The property is broke up with a few narrow tree lines, in 80 acre chunks. Has a long 30 acre of woods that runs parallel and up to a river..?

Just looking for some help with some basics so that I can have a good starting point without wasting my time. Thanks for any help.

Get out there now before bowhunting starts if you feel they are that big of a problem. This is a good time of year to wipe out the family group.

Try some distress for the young dumb ones and howling for the big pair. If you have a good idea where they are living I would go the howling route. I feel its tough to beat. Randy Anderson dvd's are good. Try right before dark witht the wind in your favor.
