trailering your boat

This will be my second year of boat ownership, and I was wondering if I could get some expert advise on trailering the boat. My question is: when pulling the rig, do you have the motor up and in the locked postion(tilted up then flip that little "L" shaped bar down, then tilt the motor down) or should you leave the motor in the down postion. Motor is a short shafted 70hp. I've heard it done both ways, and I'm just not sure.

I always leave my motors up. Dont like the skeg dragging on the ground. smile.gif A transom saver would be better way to trailer. I dont like the type that go from the trailer to the motor because if the boat bounces on the trialer at all it will be jammin on the transom. I like the type that go from the loewer unit to the boat plug.

Its best to have them up if theres any chance of hitting the skeg (driveways, etc) it always seems to find a way to happen eventually if you leave it down.

On a motor that large, if you dont have power tilt your best picking up a transom saver or similar product (bar that runs from trailer to lower unit) to assist holding the motor tilted, and obviously saves on your transom also. The weight of that motor in time on bumpy roads (arent they all?) will eventually shear the pin on the *L* shaped lever for holding it tilted and the motor will come down while your on the road. I have had that happen on a couple motors... best to use something like a transom saver before it happens.(providing you dont have power tilt)

My 140 hp Evinrude was not lowering itself yesterday, so I drove home from the (nearby) lake, where it worked fine. I added some fluid and went back to fish. My motor now works fine but I caught only a little rainbow. Now I now more about the motor at least. Good luck. Speaking of the transom savers that mount to the boat, where would one find one of these? I had one of the other style from Cabela's but it wouldn't fit my EZ Loader. Thanks in advance.

the motor does have power tilt, but I think it needs a rebuild. It will tilt it up just fine, but it will slowly lower itself down. That is why I've been trailering it in the up and locked postion.

Transom savors is where to go. Our transom got slighlty cracked on our cajun becase of it being transported with no saver. Cabelas probably has them, but we got ours at G.M. It adjusts lengths to fit any boat.

If your motor is slowly lowering, it could be that your manual release valve has loosened up on you also. Look on the unit for a thumb knob and give it a turn and see if it is loose. This is so if you have problems with your tilt and trim you can take the pressure off to lift it manually.

Also I firmly believe in transom savers. If you don't get the kind that goes to the trailer, you're not saving your transom you're only saving your power trim. If you are worried about the boat jumping on the trailer, get a set of straps for the back and strap it down. Check your motor to see if you can raise it by hand when it's down, if you are by yourself and can do this you should be able to put it on yourself.

thanks for the advise everyone. this answered alot of the questions I had. I wanted to take the boat on a longer trip, but I was a little hesitant to do so. It is an older boat an you never know what might happen.

I checked the prices on those transom savers and they seem reasonable enough that I'll most likely get one. One question I have on them is, can you put one on when your alone? I don't have a tilt switch on the motor, only on the dash.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
