Mr. Wizard
I'm looking at getting a different boat. The one I'm looking at has a 2001 90 HP Merc with EFI. Anyone have experience with that year motor? Had the Merc EFI systems been perfected by then? How is that motor different than the Optimax of today? marine_man
Is that a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke?marine_man
delcecchi
I think it must be a 4stroke, since I don't think Merc ever sold a 90 hp two stroke EFI. If it is a 4 stroke, the power head is yamaha and should be pretty solid.
Mr. Wizard
I just got an email back from the seller and it is a 2 stroke.
delcecchi
I just got an email back from the seller and it is a 2 stroke. I still believe he is mistaken. Either it is carburated not EFI, or it is a 4 stroke. I am quite sure that Mercury EFI two strokes were 150HP and up. Optimax uses the Orbital direct injection system in which fuel is injected directly into the cylinder with compressed air. It was never called EFI. MuskieJunkie
I would also think he's mistaken, he probably means oil injected. A lot of sellers make that mistake.I use to have the exact same engine (the carbed one), I had problems with water getting into the trim, it used a lot of fuel, they're really loud and it was a pain to start (pump the ball, hit the choke, fether the throttle ....). It's a good motor but there are a lot better options out there, honestly I wouldn't buy one again. If it is fuel injected it's probalby a lot better than my experience. marine_man
I still believe he is mistaken. Either it is carburated not EFI, or it is a 4 stroke. I agree. If it's a two stroke they were pretty reliable motors. They were definitely cold blooded, and needed a little time to warm up, but once warmed up were good motors. If it's a 4 stroke, and it is indeed EFI I wouldn't be too concerned.marine_man
