Good walleye lake with campground, anywhere in state?

I am looking for a good walleye lake...preferably something small...say under 3000 acres...that has a good campground on it. And dock space for a boat.
I just want a decent fishing lake to go camping and have dock space, a fire pit, and a good chance to catch some fish.

I dont care where it is in the state....preferably the brainerd, grand rapids, virginia "area". :-) Doesnt really matter. Just want a fairly quiet place to get away from the big lake crowds.

ANY IDEAS?

Hey tj- winnie has lots of campsites as well as cass and I think pike bay. Otherwise wabana here in GRapids has a couple free sites that are accessable by boat and 1st-come-1st-serve. Vermilion also has many islands w/ campsites on them and great fishing... Actually the possibilities are endless do some searches on the net and call some local baitshops for other ideas! happy camping and good fishing!

I agree on Winnie, the camp site down on Cut Foot Sioux is really nice and has boat space... We catch eyes right in cut foot, right along the campground. That would be a good bet for walleye.

Another that is not as good a fishing lake, but a great campground and great lake for a vacation is Big Sandy lake, just north of McGregor (Aitkin Cty). We got some decent walleyes while fishing in late August as well as a lot of small pike. Not a world class fishing lake, but a decent fishing lake and real nice campground and nice sandy lake.

I'd look into Leech and Cass also for good walleye fishing and mixed bag fishing.

When I lived in the twin cities, one of my favorite escape lakes was just south of Bemidji, Plantegenette . It has a good population of walleyes, nice muskies, it's a "comfortable" size lake that you can cover and doesn't draw crowds. As a bonus, there are a couple small lakes nearby that are stocked with nice fat rainbow trout (newman). We stayed at Balsam Beach Resort which has campgrounds and small cabins. We never encountered crowds there back in the early 90 when we'd go there.

If you feel a bit more adventurous, try going up to the voyageurs national park ... You'll have your choice of three connected lakes, lots of wilderness, great fishing and about 250 free national park campsites that can't be beat.

Cedar Lake off Hwy 210 west of Aitkin is a good Walleye Lake. Size is about 1,800 acres and has a nice resort to accomodate.

Also don't overlook Farm Island, about 15 minutes north of Mille Lacs on Hwy 169. This lake also is a decent walleye lake, is about 2,000 acres, and has 2 resorts available.

I totally agree with yoppdk.

Just got back from there and the fish are on fire right now. It's a big lake, but there are plenty of places to hide if the wind comes up. What's better yet is that the camping is free and the sites are very nice and well maintained. If you are interested, shoot me an email and I'll fill ya in on where we went and where to fish and anything else you might want to know. Also, talk to fishmiester over on the Rainy forum, he'll be glad to help you out.

Oh, P.S.-
I fished for 5 days and never had another boat within a half a mile from me, there are so many spots to fish that you'll have vast areas of water all to yourself. Good Luck.

I just got back from Big Sandy Lake. VERY nice campground at the Army Corp of Engineers campground. $20 w/electric, free firewood, very nice launch, own dock with some of the campsites, etc. etc. It's 13 miles north of McGregor on Hwy. 65. I didn't have my boat but watched and talked to two guys who kept coming back in with walleye, around 50 for the weekend (there were many in their campsite but I only saw these two guys fishing) Even told me where to go when I head back there.

PS....Friday evening the Ranger station wase showing "Babe 2" (Babe the pig, not what you guys were thinking......) and on Saturday the kids and I went to "spinner making" class....Nice campgrounds for kids...

all i know is that it is by the Aitkin McGregor area, small lake with not too many places on it.I haven't been there but he was telling me about it. If i remember right there might be an island in it also.

The one with the island is the Loon/Townline lake.

It is 21 feet deep and believe it or not, has nothing but Trout.

The other Townline is 48 feet deep, and has lots of 8 inch Crappies in it.
