October trip

Me and two others are planning a trip the weekend of October 16. We will have three full days of fishing. After many years of heading to the Red River we are ready for new scenerey and to cut down the travel. Thoughts are to head to LOW and fish the Rainy River; if the walleyes aren't in yet we would have the Lake as plan B. Instead of LOW, we could save more miles and head to Leech or Winni. Here's the deal, I've fished all over LOW in winter, ice fished Leech once and have never been to Winni, we've never fall fished any of the three. What's our best option, quickest to learn, etc. if we are targeting Walleyes. I don't need your secret spots but any advice you can offer for us to make our decision is appreciated.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of your choices, and I'd even throw in Vermilion, Rainy and Kab. I do think your best bang for the buck will be to hire a local guide for your first day. This will add a little over $100 per guy to get on fish right away. If it were me, I'd take LOW.

Rainy would be my choice. Excellent fishing and Awesome scenery. Still can fish the rainy river or the lake.

If you stay at Woody's, he is right at the mouth of the river and has good fishing right out in front of the resort. You can also travel a little bit to numerous reefs and bays full of fish.

He will also give you several areas to try and get the latest info on what they are biting on.

Good idea to go out with him for a day or half day and learn the lake. Very reasonable rates and great accomodations. Plus he has the pub attached so all you have to do is walk back to the room. laugh

I was up at Rainy last fall with the wife and we had the bad luck of having super high winds and rain the whole time but Woody had a spot that got us out of the wind and on to some great Walleye fishing.

Woody will get you on fish and GrizzyAdams is 100% correct on the awesome scenery.

There is also a very good restaurant close by as well.

If looking to save on miles,I'd say hit leech. I've only been fishing it for a few years now but It's pretty easy to fish with really good results. most resorts will point you in the direction of fish and there are plent of those in leech. The leech lake area forum people are very great in putting you on some fish...I can tell you of some early summer spots but this year will be my first fall trip out there. It's also a great to cruise on when you want to take a break from fishing and it does have "some" bays to hang out on if the weather is cooperating.
