WEIGHING A FISH?

I really only weight a fish if I think it will come close to 5 lbs.. I have tested my scale to see how accurate it is,and its spot on.. I have the berkley scale with the clips that clip on the lip not put a hole in it.. and I have yet to have a fish flip off when weighing it.. so any fish that I post its weight.. subtract .025oz off its weight as I have the scale hooked to the clip not the fish....

Could you be more specific on the Berkley model that you use? All the "digital" ones that I've seen, use a "hook". The only Berkley model scale that I can find, that DOESN'T use the hook, is the "BOGA-grip" style.

Bob- What I have is the Berkley Culling System. If you do a search for that you it should be your first hit. It too has a hook.. but I just clip one of the plastic clips to the lower lip and then hook to the clip, not the fish. Those little plastic clips are quite strong.

Thanks so much!! Yeah, I'd seen the culling system, but had noticed that the scale ALSO had the "hook"... but hadn't thought about the clip-to-scale trick!

I was originally interested in the BOGA-styled gripper/scale, but - not wanting to start a debate here - had heard that they could damage fish too.

Like you and the others above, I RARELY feel like a need to weigh a fish... and use a Hawg Trough to MEASURE my fish.

But, every once in a while, it would be nice to able to also check the WEIGHT of a "good" fish!

In my opinion it's really hard to judge a bass' size from a picture. The one on my avatar is 7lbs 2 oz. I called my wife at 6AM to bring me my tournament scale because I had no idea how big that fish was and I didn't trust my buddy's $5 kmart spring scale (which said it was 7#, dead nutz). Then I take all the photos and I still don't think it looks like a 7lber, not even sure if it looks like a 5lber. There are a couple bars around here that have Florida 10lb bass mounted and until you get right in front of them you would swear they're 5# or less. Given that, I think a lot of guys that just haven;t caught a lot of big fish exagerate out of ignorance. Once you've caught a few big ones, you know.
