Walnuts

Anyone harvest walnuts? I've got a big tree in the backyard that is loaded down right now. Hoping that the squirrels leave some so I can get them.

I got loads of um too. Any tips on harvesting? The squirrels are already on um.

pick them when they drop to the ground. set in a card board box or paper bag to dry. when they are dried the black outer shell will crumble off. Then they are ready for cracking.

I googled "harvesting walnuts" and found a good site on it from the U of M extension service.

A buddy of mine near Cannon Falls would pick them up when they drop and put them in the driveway. The car traffic would crush the husks off, not harming the tough shells, then he would just crack them ofer the winter. They are one "tough nut to crack"!
