Dbl
Which Service pack are you running for XP Pro? As of about 8 days ago Microsoft stopped supporting SP1 and SP2. You must be running SP3 to continue to get updates and support. This might be an issue????

Dbl
This is direct from a Microsoft support forum, it might help with the NET updates, especially if you are running XP Pro 64bit. If you are running McAfee turn that off as well before these steps. Good luck, sounds as if a number of folks had success using this but for others it did nothing. Quote:Step 1: Use .Net Framework CleanUp Utility============================================1. Please download the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool from the following link: http://windowsuu.com/tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip Please Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. Double click Cleanup_tool.exe to run it, and then select the .Net Framework 2.0 in the list box. Click “OK”, click “Yes”, and click “Cleanup Now” to remove it completely. After that, please also remove the .NET 3.5. Wish-I-Were-Fishn
What is the .NET framework anyway? Do I even need it?Not running 64 bit
Dbl
Basically it is the Microsoft version of Java. Many programs will require it to run. You will also keep getting the annoying update messages if you just ignore it or uninstall it. All three versions need to be installed. You can uninstall all of them and then just add them as needed but keep in mind if you uninstall it some of your programs may no longer function. At some point you may have seen the message "this program requires .NET version xxx to operate".

Finns
Not to hijack the thread but I'm unable to download one of the above. Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (KB979906) I have framework 1.1, all the way up to framework 3.5. Any help? Finns
Must have been a 'fix' issued the other day. Am not having trouble with KB979906. For over three months I would get a message that it didn't install. Haven't gotten that message since day before yesterday!
