Remember The Next Guy!

Finally tackling a little issue I have been putting off for some time now. Its all of the issue I had figured it was.

This "thing" above (will not call it a wiring harness) is what supplies power and what not through out my 36' Chevy. He must have only had red and blue wire, which mean positive and or negative. smirk Plus he must not have had a wire snips, because where 2' would have been plenty, 6' was used. All this to power up a 1936 Chevy that does not even have heat or air. All added accessories just need a power in and ground.

Short of some interior stuff, the one thing that has not been removed and done right is the chassis electrical wiring harness. Most everything works, but it was just an issue that haunted me. I found a deal I could not pass up on a pre-made wiring harness and figured it was time. I have it pretty much ready now to start installing:

Main reason for this post is just remember the next guy when it comes to anything you do. If you can not do this or do not know what you are doing, then hire someone who specializes in what you need done. wink

Anyone else run into this stuff when you get a car or have a friend do something that he/she says "I can fix it"? I am sure Jer has a story or two. grin

We had a tow truck that melted the harness a few times under the dash. ALL of the wiring under the dash was red!

Then there was the dodge urban assault vehicle that was donated to the city. It consisted of a motor, drive train, chassis, armored body, and a dash. The only thing missing was the wiring. Every wire! That one made it to the bottom of the pile until I left!

Ya I love my 8 ball shifter. grin Pure 'Cool" IMO! Always wanted one and bought that one special.

Was able to give this project a hand full of hours tonight again. Man, this just keeps getting better & better. smirk At least I am about at the half way point now tired .

Got a good idea on how to route my new harness before it is even in the car. I can prep it loom wise and length wise so I just slip it in. Found the cause to a mysterious LED til light issue, uncovered some issues I am glad I know about and fixing, and of course looking on-line for some "new stuff" at good deals, if I can find them. grin

I should say this entire venture started because of a turn signal and brake light issue. Its gotten into an entire new wiring harness and some more stuff now. grin

Some things the owner of my 36' before me did were very "trick" and well thought out. When it came to the interior & wiring, he must have missed class that day or just wanted to get it done.

Who on Gods green earth would use this stuff as a sound barrier?

Well, $40.00 for some "real" stuff was too much I guess and this is what it is:

I guess he found glue when it came to putting it up the firewall. Thank god he slacked on the gluing job. grin

Well after yesterday and tonight, the cancer is just a memory:

Once again, if you do not know how to do something, find out or hire someone. Not only problems with stuff not working could occur, but worse things could happen, like fire????

Like using a makeshift, home brew parts for an isolator for the main positive battery cable, not to mention using black cable for a positive smirk . I found this, which ran right in the middle of the drivers seat & passenger seat:

Nothing like having week insulation on your positive battery cable while resting on a thin film of melted home carpet under lament mm's from a ground.

Ah well, water under the bridge now. Just glad I am getting it done for functionality & piece of mind. Even though I have done a ton to this rod, it just floors me when people will put a ton of effort into something and just bomb on the easy details. I guess I am part to blame. I should have addressed this years ago. grin

Just has me scratching my head even more now that I have the wiring out and looking at it.

i had the same thing going on here, there are 23 more lights than stock through out the vehicle, 8 sperate light switches, 5 relays and the wiring ended up being a MESS! got the same motivation as you did, took 2 days and did it right! its peacefull being able to drive and know that its not going to start on fire because of something you didnt do right while you were at it (:

Broken... I will warn you, unless covered while driving on the road, almost all of those lights are illegal. There is a number limit and a height limit on "on-road" use lights. Just an FYI.

theres a hight requirement of 42" from road surface, and you can only have 2 lights on plus the headlights when on road.. ive been pulled over 4 times with the lights just as they are and the cops havent said anything about the aux lights.. 3 of the times were, taillight issues on the boat trailer and the other one was my buddie was driving through town with all of the lights on.. cop just said turn em off and didnt seem like it was a big deal.. they are for goose hunting, farming, whatever else needs lighting up and its awsome being able to light up a sign 3 to 4 miles away (:

shack. could we see a pic of the outside of the truck? (:

down in that direction it can be flat enough to shine all those lights to the west across South Dakota and light up the back of your own truck to find what you are looking for, unless those presidents get in the way. North Dakota is better for that.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
