legal documents needed for owning firearms in MN

Recommended Posts

What are the legal documents such as license and such to own

1. an AR-15

2. Pistol

3. Revolver

4. Rifle/shotgun (bolt action rifles)

5. Every other firearms

Im 17 turning 18 next year and yea 18 is young to be owning AR's and such but i am not like any other teen ive been mostly kinda a loner guy but not the loner were its bad just loner as in im not the averege teen. Im a loner cuz my intrest differ i have been under the wing of a very smart man when it comes to saftey and the kind of care and respect that is needed for a firearm. Even i correct adults about firearms saftey and have lectured people about being imature with a firearm and doing stupid stuff with them. Anyways i see myself owning a few firearms in the future and an AR is one of em when i turn 21 and also a few handguns and whatnot and i have heard in some states it takes up to 1-3 years just to have permission to own fully-autos and such. That being said what legal docs, and licenses should i need to apply for and get to be owning the firearms i see myself owning in my future?

well you can't purchase a handgun or be in possesion of one (without an adult with you) until you are 21. There is a "permit to purchase" you will need to get from your local police department or county sherriff depending where you live and there will be a background check on you and where you have lived the last 10 years. (be ready with those addresses too)

We have talked about ar's before on this site and when i bought my AR15 five years ago it was not classified as an assault weapon (no bayonet lug) and therefore I didn't need a permit to purchase....I am really not sure what current statutes state at this time.

Keep with your interests, there are other teens out there who have the same interests as you. Most importantly keep yourself on the straight and narrow....

None of the weapons you have listed are full auto totally diffrent deal. You need a permit to carry or purchase for a hand gun don't know about the AR's any rifles or shotguns you just need to be 18 and a non felon with a valid ID/drivers Lic and pass a background check.

handgun im not too worried about since you only have to be 18 to hunt with one with no license to carry it as for purchase its obvious to need a possession license or whatever since you own it. Im just more worried about the AR's

I know I have seen some stores that require a purchase permit to but a AR style rifle. Like pick's said it might be if it is considerd a semi auto or a assault weapon if you have a gun shop that you go to or knows you the best thing would be to just ask them they know who they can sell to.

I also have to coment on 18 is to young. I started shooting competion/registered trap at 11 year buy the time I got my drivers lic I was driving to the grand nationals in ohio with me and my girlfriend now my wife with two very expensive guns in the trunk and noboady thought anything diffrent about it they know how I am with my guns with the saftey aspect and handeling just remember trap guns have no safteys on them keep them open or I will kick you off the range. So 18 is not too young for some even though it's a small minority of youth their are some that can be trusted but some would just rather go shoot stuff and cause problems.

A "Permit to Purchase" is required for an AR style rifle, just like a handgun....in Minnesota. I don't believe the bayonet attachment is the factor in determining if it's classified as an AR, but more so the pistol grip.

As far as age goes, it appears that handguns and semi-auto AR style rifles are treated the same, so until you're 18 years old you'll have to be under direct parental supervision while possessing or carrying the weapon.

I have hunted with a Deagle 50ae while my dad was supervising. The regs from last year stated you must be 18+ to hunt alone with a handgun does that mean i can barrow my uncles Deagle and go hunt with it alone? What if im 17-18 and barrowed my uncles AR to go hunt alone?

lmit, when did that change. I bought my AR 5 maybe 6 years ago, I didn't need it then, but I still had it

Don't know when it changed, but I bought an AR last December and had to get a permit to purchase. I didn't know that at the time so the gun dealer had to hold it until the paperwork was processed. I called to a few other dealers to verify and they all said the same thing.

Papers! Show us your papers! grin

Sorry, I had a typo. You are correct. I should have said 18, not 21, to possess or carry a pistol or AR.

not only do you need a permit to purchase an AR in Minnesota, but if you were to travel to say south dakota, you would also still need a minnesota permit to purchase or minnesota concealed carry permit if you would like to buy one here. that prevents those from skirting around the law.
