Jiffy Auger

I have a Jiffy gas auger that is a couple of years old. It starts just fine, but the second you put a load on it, it runs like dump. It has done this since I received it brand new. Anybody have any ideas on getting it to run better? Thanks.

This is most likely the air/fuel mixture. I dont have a jiffy but all of those small engines run about the same and with 3 or 4 of them in my garage it's almost allways fine tuning air/fuel. Look for 2 small screws on the carb. Get it running and warmed up. While under load at open throttle adjust those screws until running at a good high rpm. If you are unable to get it this way it may need a carb kit but since you said it has done this from day one it's probably just a bit of tuning you need.

if the auger is flooding out,it needs a diaframe[not spelled correctly],my seemed to run ok until a load was put on it,common tune up cured that problem............

Let the engine warm up for at least one minute. Mine runs like dump ifnz you start it up and start drilling holes right away.
After I figgerd out that you have to let it warm up especailly for the first time you fish for the day! After that it works fine.
Also I leave the choke in the middle setting until I have drilled a few holes.
I wouldn't touch the carb settings at all unless the warm up method does'nt work.

Good point Finlander,
You really need to let it warm up for it to run at peak performance. Myself, thats why I went to an electric. I can have 2 or 3 holes drilled, no gas smell, very little noise, before the other guys has his auger running good.

I had a jiffy that ran real rough also... woud backfire. I cleaned it, put a new spark plug in, then messed with the screw, on the throtle side untill it started to caugh again.. then backed it out till it did the same, then put it under load and ajusted it again fine tune.(you will need 2 people for this)... mine now works better than it ever has...

Letting it warm up is a good idea also!

With a Jiffy Auger it is almost required to adjust the power adjustment screw while on the lake.

Even adjusted at max RPM, when put under load it will still bog out.

Chances favor that when doing fine tuning in your garage or driveway you are not simulating typical running conditions by one; Not have a load on the auger..And two; that the auger has probably ran for more then 4 or 5 minutes while adjusting...Being warmed up more then typical drilling conditions.

Well, I have an auger that i got about 10 yrs ago. 3hp with a 10" auger It's got an engine on it from U.S. engine's(now out of bis.).
I haven't fished in the past 3 yrs. Went to get the thing out and found the gas line fitting had gotten broken off(plastic tank)
I got that fixed up with some parts from the hobby shop.
Got some of that new syn. mix oil in the pouch but didn't have any gas but some left over race gas(112 oct.)
Well about 6 pulls later that thing was humming like a new one...lol Man that thing will through ice chips.
Now we just need to catch some fish...Have the week off...look out French & Shields
They do need to warm up vary well.

Don't sell your auger. While I have a Strikemaster, JIffy uses the same Tecumseh 2hp and 3 hp motors.

I have a 3 hp XL-3000. While some guys think they can fire their motors right up and start drilling, I always let it warm up for at least a minute, and better two minutes. Sounds like a really long time while guys around you are drilling holes, but who cares who is first?

I start it on full choke, drill the first hole on full choke, bump it to half choke and drill all the holes I need on half choke until it starts choking out. Then I turn it to no-choke, but only when the motor tells me to.

A guy who has sold Jiffy and Strikemaster for years tells me the 3 hp motors take longer to warm than the 2 hp ones.

Do you have a three?

If this doesn't work, take it to someone who knows what they are doing with auger motors, namely, an authorized Jiffy service outlet. Tell them your problem. If they can't fix it, tell Jiffy they sold you a dud. The auger wars are so nasty that the two major companies will do a lot to keep people from switching brands.

Sure is odd what the color of the paint on them Tecumseh 2hp and 3 hp motors appears to do to the performance?

Rodger that Eddy, ct and pcg, the main difference in lazer and jiffy (besides the same engine) is jiffy uses an iron gear box and gears and lazer uses plastic.go figure, where do you think the weight difference comes from. <((((><

p.s. as far as taking two people to adjust a small screw, let me guess, it takes two of them to change a light bulb also. they must be only the second generation to walk upright.
