St Croix Premier - Med Heavy?

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a 8ft St. Croix Premier heavy and I'm putting a Toro Revo on it. I haven't used it yet and I'm thinking of exchanging it for a med-heavy. I plan to use it as an all around rod. lots of bucktails, double cowgirls, topwaters, gliders, depth raiders, etc. I already have a heavier rod that I use for the larger bull dawgs etc.

The HEAVY St Croix is noticably heavier than my X-HEAVY Shimano Compre. Would it be a mistake to go down to medium heavy?

Get h instead for all purpose baits... I have mh I use it for reg size bucktails and propeller topwater baits... It's load to much on figure 8 with dcg even tho it can cast pretty good. Just my .02.

Thanks for the feedback! Just to confirm, you are talking about the St Croix Premier rods, right? It seems each rod manufacturer seems to vary quite a bit on what H, MH, and XH are. The H St Croix premier is quite a bit heavier than the XH Shimano Compre.

I don't think there would be any benefit to dropping to MH, especially if you plan on moving those DCG w/ any amount of speed. I used a H Premier for two years and I thought even that rod loaded too much on the eight if I was moving a DCG at a pace outside of a slow roll. After switching to a 9' Avaio this year, I'd suggest going heavier and longer.
