rod for double blades?

Recommended Posts

I know this probably comes up often, but here it goes:

I'm pairing up an abu garcia 7000i with a rod that I plan to use for double blades.

Is there anything out there that is affordable (<$100) for this purpose?

How about two-piecers? There is no way I could transport a 1 piece 9 foot rod as I have to carry all my rods in my car. 7 foot rods fit fine but I'd certainly enjoy a longer rod.

Do any of you use rods for double duty of mag bulldawgs and blades, or is the weight difference too much?

Thanks smile

The Okuma Muskie rods (8'6" XH/XXH should be perfect for your situation. They are telescoping rods, so they can can collapse to I think ~7', lifetime warrenty, great reviews on this site from others, and I think are around $110.

Tackle industry rods are also a great choice as mentioned. The rear handle is removeable to make it easier to transport/store.

I have a Gander Mtn extra heavy and a Scheels extra heavy, both 8', both were like $80, I love the Gander rod, I'd love the Scheels rod too but it doesn't have one of those little hook loops down above the rod handle so that kind of irritates me about that rod, but performance wise I have no complaints.

Both can chuck a pair of blades and have no problem bringing them back or figure 8'ing with them - and they can both toss a bull dawg just as far as any other rod. I had a 2 door 88 Honda Prelude that I drove to work and on days when we were taking my buddies boat I brought those rods in the car so if they fit in that car, they will fit in any car.

I have an 8ft gander mountain rod from last year that works great. I bought an 8ft 6in gander mountain rod from this years model and had about 2inches break off the butt end of it after about 4hrs of use first time out. Needless to say I will be returning it (30day return policy if it breaks).

Tackle Industries 8'6"/9" XH is what you are looking for, the rod comes with 2 handles, a 6" extension and a 12" extension, takes on dbl 10's and 13's perfect in the figure 8, for the money I'll be grabbing another.

Have heard good things about the Okuma also, but no personal experience.

Problem right now is you can't get a TI 9' XH anywhere, they are sold out til august. Would a better option be getting the 9' XXH or the 8' XH? Rod will be used mostly for 10's and 13's and some other big baits.

The tackle industries has been giving my brother problems, he went through two this season already. My Okuma 8'6" XXH telescopic is a good rod for big blades and plastic.

RU - the first he had the threads on the handle strip out on him and the replacement had a loose blank in the handle or something. It was making an loud noise every cast. Seems like the action on it is good, just not sure yet about the durability.

I actually picked up a Field and Stream 8 foot Heavy rod for $49.99 at Richard's Sporting goods... wasn't expecting much but it has been one of the most comfortable casting rod's I have used. I have thrown everything from an Uptown Dawg to Jerk baits and suicks on this rod and still have no hesitations picking it up.
