Salem Ice Cabin fish house

I picked up the Salem 8X16FK last winter from Coates RV in Forest Lake. I couldn't have been happier with the quality of the unit. It pulls very easy with an F250. I had it on Mille Lacs for several weekends and had no problems. It stayed very warm and was very easy on the LP. I am now using it as a camper during the weekends on some property near Sturgeon Lake. It is plenty comfortable and it came prewired for a roof AC unit. Being able to use it pretty much all year was the reason I went with the nicer Salem.

I have been comparing the FK vs. the DS models that Salem has. Is there a benefit to having your forced air vents closer to the door like the FK or does it not matter if the stove and vents are in the back, far from the door?

Does the Salem ice cabin pull really nice since it is manufactured by a RV company?

In my opinion th FK model was the better of the 2 designs. The dinette in the FK model makes into a great bed. The 2 sofa's in the DS do fold down but it's just for kids. I also like the kitchen by the door because I usually keep the cooler outside and it's within reach with the FK model. I never had any issues with the furnace because the vents can be adjusted to blow in any direction. I have pulled the 16FK with both an F250 and my wife's Durango. It pulls very nice down the road and it seems to have the correct amount of tongue weight. I would bet that if you went to a dealer they would let you hook one up and pull it around if they thought you were serious about buying one. I used mine all summer for camping and it worked out great. These units are preframed and prewired for the roof AC which is nice.

Has any one ever measured the width of one of these houses ? Me & a buddy tried to one day at a dealer but we did not have a tape measure so we used a rope, when we later measured the rope it measured over 8'6" (we had gone from the outside of wheels). We thought we were right when we marked the rope but can not believe that they are over legal width?

8'6" is the legal limit for width.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
