25 horse Merc

I aquired a 25 horse Merc thats been sitting for a few years and want to put a carb kit and lower unit seal kit and impeller into it. I have never put a carb kit into an outboard but have torn apart and cleaned my snowmobile carbs a couple times. Is it a bad idea to try and do this myself? I am fairly mechanically inclined and take things apart and put them back together daily. How bad are impellers to put in?

Thanks, thats what I wanted to hear. I'm hoping it isn't too tough, but either way it should be interesting.

I'm not too sure what seals are in the lower unit kit. I figured if I was tearing the lower unit off, I might as well make sure all the gaskets and seals are new. I plan to take pictures before I take anything apart so I have something to go back and reference just in case.

I would start with the carb kit and a water pump kit.. which will contain the seals for the water pump housing... I wouldn't mess with the lower unit seals.. when you get to that point you're talking about pulling the gear set out of the lower unit. If there's no problem with it (ie - not getting water in the gear case) I'd leave it alone.

Approximately what year? Whats the serial number. The reason I ask is whether or not the bearing carrier has the 2 screws holding it in or the cover nut that requires a special tool to remove. If its new enough to have the 2 screws, replacing the prop shaft seals and bearing carrier oring is actually pretty easy.
