Carpenter
Wondering if helmets are good until they're in an accident, or if they should be replaced every 'X' years? Anyone know?
Rippinlip
Just guessing here, but as long as the shell is not cracked inside or out, the foam protection inside is not wrecked, and the straps are good, I would think it is good to keep you safe, but any of the listed items are less than ideal, I would replace. So to answer your question I do not believe there is an expiration date. I think more helmets are replaced on style and color than saftey. Dave S
The foam inside of the helmets has a useable life expectancy of 5 years. After 5 years of use, good or bad, your helmet doesn't offer the same level of protection as it did new.
Carpenter
I figured it was about that. Looks like it might be time for a new brain bucket. Thanks guys.
BorderView
LEP7MM,Why the decrease in safety after time? Does the foam breakdown? It is not exposed to UV rays. I can't imagine air creating breakdown. Maybe moisture? Or is it a standard that the manufacturers use to be better safe than liable?
Dave S
whether it's a foam insert or styrofoam in the helmets, it's still a petroleum based product that does breakdown over time. Although you may not be able to see any significant difference in the appearance, it will tend to shrink or get thinner over time. There has been a new standard released for helmets in the last couple years that goes beyond the DOT and Snell 2000 ratings. I just don' recall the name of it. Almost time to head to work. I'll see if I can dig up the info later.
