What grain bullet for elk?

Recommended Posts

What will you be shooting? I use a 160g partition in my 7mm rem mag, or a 165 grain in a 300 win mag. IMO, it depends upon what cartridge you're shooting. It's tempting to use the "bigger is better" logic, but a great many elk have fallen to basic traditional ammo from .30-30's and .300 savages, even .243s.

Look towards the 300 grain great plains bullet they are solid and will give you the penatration that you will need if you hit any amount of bone. I shoot the 250 grain hornady ballistic tips with 150 grains of powder and they work great for deer but might break up too much for elk. I also think that sabots are illegal in colorado so check into the laws you might have to use a powerbelt or other instead of the the normal sabots.

Otis - are you using a flintlock, caplock or in-line? I would have no problem using a patched round ball (PRB) with 80-100 grains using my TC .54 Renegade caplock within 100 yards. If it's an in-line, I don't have experience there.
