fishing addict
I am looking to get a reel with an accurate line counter for long line trolling. I have looked at the Daiwa and Okuma models. the daiwa looks good but is spendy. Anyone used these or have any other suggestions?
bry c
Ive used one from south bend for three seasons and have not any issues so far, was probably half price of the daiwa, it also has a backreel switch which is an interesting feature, not sure if other l/c reels have that
slick2526
IF you want a reel with a good rep, and a high price, buy a diawa. The new Line Counter that Okuma has came out with, the covector, is suppose to blow their older model linecounter reel out of the water. I have spoke to a few charter boat captain's and they say the rate them right up their with the diawas. Also, take a look at the abu garcia line counters. They seem sweet, but a little spendy. I think the cool option is that you can program it to the diameter of the braid or mono you are using for you get an exact reading of the amount of line you let out.If you dont want to get too spendy, try to find a combo with a shakespeare reel. I think I seen one at basspro for 60 bucks. Not bad, but if you plan on using your linecounter alot I would throw in the extra for one you know will last you a while."Sometimes the fish dont agree with my lure................................. I guess they dont know whats good for them."
GooseSlayer
I own two of the Cabela's Depth master golds, and have been very happy with their performance. They cost around 80 bucks, they also have a economy model called Depthmaster II for 50 bucks.I've seen both, and there is not much diference. They both are top notch reels for the money. And if you don't like them, you can return them.I'll never part with mine.Looking at picking up two more.Check out the price on combos, the rod will only cost 20 dollars more.Good fishing! SpringerGuy
I have a couple of the Okuma reels and have been very impressed with them. I also think that if you have Abu Gracia rells that the line counter add on is a good choice.PoleBender

Sgt. Rock
Just got a new Cabela's sale catalog and the Depthmaster reels are on sale for $40 and you can get a combo rod outfit for $50. Big savings. Now I need to decide which one to get!!
Guest
I used 2 of the "20" sized Okuma's all last summer. I had no complaints on the drag system,I use them for trolling for walleyes all summer, and for large Lakers on the Niagara Bar in the fall also, and it really gives the drag system a workout. The line counter is accurate, and the counter operation never was any problem, other than the line counter seem to get "Reset" by accident allot. It's not allot of trouble though because it only seemed to happen after I let the line out to where I wanted it(Maybe when I grab for the rod when the lure is hit).I'm going to get a third one this summer. Old Guide
I've been using a couple of Okumas for a while and have been very satisfied with them. As mentioned above there was a calibration problem with the first ones out but has been fixed. Not a bad reel for the price.------------------Old Guide ChartersLake of the Woodshttp://fishingminnesota.com/oldguidecharters/Call Toll Free:1-800-952-(9484)
