Boar
Good question. My site on family land is on a little mound surounded by thick couver, bear llike to feel sucure when feeding at a unatural food source, so a spot that is'nt to open is good. The mound allows rain to drain away an my site stays pretty dry after a good rain. My land is mostly riverbottom, an I set my stand on a finger spine that drops down into the riverbottom, about ten feetfrom the bottom of the spine is my stand tree, the stand is 15 feet up in the tree which actually put me about 25 feet off the forest floor. The spine is my back drop25 yard from the mound site. Being on that spine dosent allow bear to circle behind me which a mature boar likes to do before entering a site. Lots of natural food in that riverbottom to, mushrooms, acorns rassbwerries. So, cover, water, food souce. On a new site like the one I opend last year I set my stand 35 yards from the site, The bear I shot appeard 10' from the base of my stand an i was only 6' feet off the ground. Had to be, any higher an I would have stuck out like a sore thumb, had to blend in with ground brush cause the area had been logged off years ago. So if I go rifle again I'll give it 50 yrds to the site. To try an counter the circling factor. The tough thing is when it gets dark at that distance an illumited reticle is a must. Some like being near running water cause it help mask any noise a person makes. If you can find a little higher ground in thick cover near a water hole or in the general area an there is natural food in the area youve goter licked. Just dont over think it.
